Google has announced its new Safety Charter in India, focusing on expanding its AI-driven efforts to tackle fraud and scams in this rapidly growing market. With digital fraud on the rise, particularly linked to the instant payment system UPI, Google aims to offer solutions through technological innovations.
The company has launched its fourth security engineering center in India, following those in Dublin, Munich, and Malaga. This center will collaborate with local government, academia, and businesses to address cybersecurity, privacy, safety, and AI challenges. Partnering with the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, Google is enhancing awareness about cybercrimes. This extends to their online fraud identification initiative, DigiKavach, aimed at mitigating risks from malicious apps.
Google’s Indian center will target online scams, enterprise cybersecurity, and responsible AI development. These efforts align with their global use of AI, which already combats online scams, blocks harmful ads, and protects millions of users.
Their AI-powered Scam Detection in Google Messages has shielded users from over 500 million suspicious messages monthly. Additionally, Google Play Protect has thwarted nearly 60 million high-risk app installations, and Google Pay issued 41 million scam alerts within UPI transactions.
In an evolving digital landscape, Google is closely monitoring the use of AI by malicious actors. They are thoroughly testing AI models to prevent misuse and are developing frameworks to ensure safety in generative AI, akin to the internet’s early days of protocol establishment.
Highlighting the threat of commercial surveillance vendors selling hacking platforms, Google stresses ongoing collaboration with researchers to mitigate these risks, especially in markets like India. With multi-factor authentication (MFA) already in place for users, Google continues to promote secure access methods, acknowledging regional preferences like SMS-based authentication.
Through these initiatives, Google aims to strengthen India’s digital security landscape, leveraging AI and global expertise to effectively counter emerging threats.
