Google Photos is making a notable change for people who prefer a simpler, faster way to find pictures: Google is rolling out a new toggle that lets you switch back to the classic Google Photos search experience instead of using the newer AI-driven option, Ask Photos.
Ask Photos debuted in the U.S. in 2024 as a more conversational way to search your photo library. Rather than relying on short keyword searches, it allows natural-language prompts and more detailed requests—useful in theory for things like describing events, people, or scenarios. But in practice, the feature hasn’t won everyone over.
After the initial release, Google briefly paused the rollout last summer while working on performance problems, particularly around search speed and responsiveness. Some users continued to report that Ask Photos could feel slower than the classic experience, and others said it sometimes missed photos they knew were in their library or returned results that felt less accurate than the older search.
Google did already provide a way to reduce AI involvement by disabling Gemini in Google Photos, but that option lived deeper in the settings and was easy to miss. Now the company is making the choice much more obvious: a new, visible toggle on the search screen will allow users to turn off Ask Photos and view classic search results instead. Google also says it will still try to surface whichever results best match your query, even as you switch between experiences.
Google Photos lead Shimrit Ben-Yair indicated the update is a direct response to user feedback, saying the company has heard that people want more control over what kind of search results they see in Google Photos. She also noted that Google has been improving the quality of some of the most common searches based on what users have been reporting.
The takeaway is simple: if you like AI-powered photo search, it’s still there. But if you want the older, often faster classic search—or you’ve been frustrated by missed matches and inconsistent results—Google is making it much easier to opt out and get back to the experience you’re used to.
