God of War’s Laufey Faces a Three-Month Delay

God of War Laufey Delayed to May 2027 as Santa Monica Studio Takes More Time to Finish the Spin-Off

God of War Laufey will no longer arrive in February 2027. Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that the upcoming spin-off in the rebooted God of War series has been delayed by just over three months, moving its release date from February 16, 2027, to May 20, 2027.

The game was first revealed during Sony’s State of Play showcase in June, where it quickly became one of the most talked-about announcements from the event. God of War Laufey shifts the spotlight away from Kratos and focuses on Laufey, his late wife and the mother of Atreus. Deborah Ann Woll is set to return in the role, giving fans another chance to explore a character who has played an important part in the emotional foundation of the modern God of War storyline.

Santa Monica Studio shared that the delay is needed to give the development team more time to polish the game and deliver the experience fans expect from the franchise. While delays are always disappointing, the response from the community has been largely positive. Many players have expressed support for the decision, saying they would rather wait a little longer for a complete and refined game than see it released before it is ready.

God of War Laufey has already shown strong commercial interest. After pre-orders opened, the game reportedly climbed to the number two spot in several countries, sitting behind only GTA 6. That level of demand suggests that, even without Kratos as the main playable focus, the God of War brand remains incredibly powerful.

Still, the spin-off has not been without debate. Some fans and critics have questioned whether a God of War game centered on Laufey can match the impact of previous entries, especially since Kratos has been the heart of the series for so long. Others argue that exploring Laufey’s story could add new emotional depth to the franchise and expand the mythology in a meaningful way.

For now, God of War fans will have to wait until May 20, 2027, to experience Laufey’s story. If the extra development time helps Santa Monica Studio deliver a polished and memorable adventure, the delay may end up being well worth it.
