Garmin’s Premium Smartwatches Get a Major Upgrade With 12 New Features and Fixes

Garmin has released another beta update for its high-end Fenix smartwatches, showing that development for the Fenix 8 series is moving at a fast pace even as the newer Fenix 9 beta program begins.

The latest release, Beta Version 24.16, arrives only days after the previous beta and marks the fourth beta update for the Fenix 8 lineup in roughly three weeks. While Garmin has only recently opened the first beta cycle for the Fenix 9 series, the company is still actively refining its previous-generation premium smartwatch range with frequent fixes and improvements.

Beta Version 24.16 is now being rolled out to users enrolled in Garmin’s Beta Program. If the update has not appeared automatically, eligible users can manually request it as an over-the-air download directly from the watch.

This update focuses mainly on bug fixes, stability improvements, navigation corrections, language refinements, and display fixes. Garmin has also expanded currency symbol support for select fonts, which should improve the way financial symbols appear across supported watch interfaces and apps.

However, there is one important limitation. Garmin says Dive and ECG features remain disabled in this beta release across all compatible models, including the Fenix 8 Pro. Users who rely on those features may want to keep this in mind before installing the beta software.

The Garmin Fenix 8 Beta Version 24.16 update includes several notable fixes. It resolves a problem where some Garmin Connect courses with long names failed to appear on the watch after syncing. It also fixes an issue that could cause the device to reboot during navigation when the system language was set to German.

For fitness tracking, the update corrects a bug where pack weight metrics could disappear after certain activities that use pack weight data. Garmin has also addressed an issue where the selected swim wrist could show as “Unknown” after setup.

Golf users receive multiple improvements as well. Beta Version 24.16 restores the missing Golf Performance widget and fixes the golf radial hole picker, which had not been working properly for some users.

The update also improves alerts and notifications. Storm alerts now use the expected tone and vibration behavior instead of appearing like phone notifications. Garmin has also fixed text overlap in messenger call toast notifications, making incoming call alerts easier to read.

Navigation settings have been cleaned up too, with Garmin removing unsupported turn-guidance alerts that were incorrectly appearing for some users. In addition, the update fixes Chinese translation display problems and includes broader translation improvements across the system.

Overall, Garmin Beta Version 24.16 appears to be a maintenance-focused but meaningful update for the Fenix 8 series. While it does not introduce major new features, it improves reliability across navigation, golf, activity tracking, translations, alerts, and on-device text display. For Fenix 8 owners participating in the beta program, this release should make the smartwatch experience smoother and more polished.
