Garmin’s Premium Smartwatches Get a Big Upgrade Packed With New Features

Garmin rolls out major beta update for premium smartwatches with key fixes

Garmin has released a significant new beta software update for several of its older high-end smartwatches, including models such as the Fenix 7X Pro. The update, listed as Beta Version 28.02, is now available globally and focuses on improving reliability rather than introducing new features.

This is the first major beta release in around three months and follows the recent stable System Software 27.18 update. Garmin appears to be using the new 28.xx beta cycle to clean up lingering bugs reported by users, especially around navigation, maps, GPS settings, golf features, widgets, and overall device stability.

One of the most important fixes in Garmin Beta Version 28.02 addresses navigation calculations. Some users had experienced situations where route or navigation calculations could fail, but this update is designed to restore more dependable performance. That should be welcome news for runners, cyclists, hikers, and outdoor users who rely heavily on Garmin watches for route guidance.

The update also fixes an issue affecting the Garmin Coach widget, which could sometimes fail to display data. For users following structured training plans, this could make the widget far less useful, so the fix should make daily coaching and workout tracking smoother.

Garmin has also improved how GPS settings behave when switching between outdoor and indoor versions of the same activity. Previously, choosing an indoor version of an activity could disable the GPS setting for the outdoor version. With Beta Version 28.02, the watch should now preserve those settings more consistently.

Golf users receive several fixes as well. Garmin says the update resolves a problem where HRM 200 and HRM 600 heart rate monitors would not work properly during Golf activities. It also fixes an issue where newly added clubs from the Garmin Golf app did not appear in the watch’s club list. Another golf-related correction targets rangefinders, which could sometimes show outdated or stale data.

Map performance is another area of attention. The update fixes a device validation issue that could appear while downloading TopoActive maps, along with stability problems when downloading maps through the map manager app. These fixes should make map downloads more reliable, especially for users who frequently update regional maps before travel or outdoor adventures.

The calendar widget has also been improved. Garmin notes that the widget could sometimes be slow to load, and Beta Version 28.02 is intended to make it respond more reliably.

Garmin is not pushing this beta update automatically to every eligible device. Users who want to install it must manually check for the update on their watch. To do that, open the main menu, go to Settings, then System, then Software Update, and select Check for Updates.

At the moment, Garmin has not confirmed when the 28.xx software branch will become a stable public release. However, the previous 27.xx beta cycle moved relatively quickly, with only a small number of beta builds before reaching stable status. If testing goes smoothly, a stable version of this Garmin smartwatch update could arrive without a long wait.

In summary, Garmin Beta Version 28.02 is not a flashy feature-packed update, but it brings practical improvements that many users will appreciate. With fixes for navigation, GPS behavior, Garmin Coach, golf accessories, map downloads, widgets, and general stability, this update should make supported Garmin premium smartwatches more dependable in everyday use and outdoor activities.
