Garmin is moving its latest smartwatch software forward again with a fresh beta update aimed at smoothing out navigation and polishing a few everyday details. After a period that felt like a step back into an older development rhythm—mainly delivering essential fixes that hadn’t made it into earlier v20.xx builds—the company is now pushing ahead with v21.xx development.
This new release is Beta Version 21.17, and it’s already rolling out to about half of eligible devices enrolled in Garmin’s Beta Program. The update targets several high-end models, including Enduro 3, Fenix E, Fenix 8, and Tactix 8.
One important detail: Aviation, Dive, and ECG features are currently disabled in this beta phase. That’s typically a sign Garmin expects more testing and refinement before v21.xx is ready for the stable software channel. In other words, the company appears to be prioritizing reliability and additional beta validation before flipping the switch on a broader public release.
What’s new in Garmin Beta 21.17
Garmin says this beta resolves four bugs found in Beta Version 21.16 and earlier builds. The improvements focus heavily on navigation stability and interface usability—two areas that matter most for athletes, hikers, and anyone relying on consistent GPS guidance.
Here’s what Beta Version 21.17 fixes:
Fixed Active Navigation loop missing data fields after restoring from a backup.
Fixed an issue where losing GPS could cause navigation to end.
Fixed the backup confirmation page to have a three-second wait before confirming.
Fixed Portal watch face readability when accent colour is red, and Red Shift is on.
The standout fix for many users will likely be the navigation change. If you’ve ever had a route abruptly end because GPS dropped out temporarily, this update is designed to prevent that from happening—an important improvement for trail runs, cycling routes, and long outdoor sessions where GPS signal can fluctuate.
The backup-related updates also address quality-of-life annoyances. Restoring from a backup should now keep Active Navigation data fields intact, and the added three-second delay on the backup confirmation screen helps prevent accidental taps that can lead to unwanted changes.
Finally, Garmin is also refining visual clarity with a fix for the Portal watch face, particularly when using a red accent color with Red Shift enabled—an option many people prefer at night or in low-light environments.
If you’re enrolled in the beta program on an Enduro 3, Fenix E, Fenix 8, or Tactix 8, this is one of those small-but-meaningful updates that improves day-to-day reliability, especially for navigation-heavy activities.
