Garmin Boosts Mid-Range Smartwatches With New Connectivity Update

Garmin Releases Public Beta 29.05 for Forerunner 165, 255, 265, 955 and 965 Smartwatches

Garmin is rolling out another software update for several popular Forerunner smartwatches, bringing a small but important fix for users enrolled in the public beta program. The new release, Public Beta Version 29.05, replaces the earlier Public Beta Version 29.04 and is now available for eligible Forerunner models.

The update applies to the Garmin Forerunner 165, Forerunner 255, Forerunner 265, Forerunner 955 and Forerunner 965. These models have continued to receive active software improvements, helping extend their usefulness with bug fixes, performance tweaks and feature refinements.

Earlier this month, Garmin introduced Public Beta Version 29.04, which was designed to improve these Forerunner watches across multiple areas. However, the company did not fully detail every change included since the latest stable software release, Software Version 28.05.

Now, Public Beta Version 29.05 has arrived with a more focused changelog. According to Garmin, the new beta update fixes an issue that could interfere with device connections during Virtual Run activities. For runners who use Virtual Run to connect their watch with compatible training platforms or fitness apps, this fix may improve reliability and reduce connection problems during workouts.

Garmin says the Public Beta Version 29.05 rollout has already reached all eligible devices. If the update has not appeared automatically on your watch, you can check for it manually.

To install the update, open the main menu on your Garmin Forerunner smartwatch, then go to Settings, select System, choose Software Update and tap Check for Updates. Your watch must be enrolled in Garmin’s Beta Software Program to receive public beta releases.

Although this update only lists one change compared with Version 29.04, that may be a sign that Garmin is nearing the end of the current beta cycle. When a beta release receives only minor fixes, it often suggests that a stable software update could follow soon. However, Garmin has not confirmed when Version 29.xx will move to the stable channel.

For now, Forerunner users in the beta program can install Public Beta 29.05 to get the latest Virtual Run connection fix. Owners who prefer to avoid beta software may want to wait for Garmin’s next official stable update.
