Garmin Rolls Out Feature-Packed Smartwatch Update With Key Upgrades

Garmin Rolls Out Major Beta Update for Older Forerunner Smartwatches

Garmin is continuing to support several older Forerunner smartwatches with fresh software updates, showing that its previous-generation running watches are still very much in the company’s update plans.

While Garmin’s newer Forerunner lineup now includes models such as the Forerunner 70, Forerunner 170, Forerunner 570, and Forerunner 970, the company is also delivering improvements to popular older devices. This includes the Forerunner 165, Forerunner 255, Forerunner 265, Forerunner 955, and Forerunner 965.

After releasing Software Version 28.05 in June, Garmin has now started rolling out its next major beta update: Public Beta Version 29.04. The update is available for compatible Forerunner watches that are enrolled in Garmin’s Beta Program.

At the moment, the rollout is happening in stages. Garmin says only around 20% of eligible devices have received the update notification so far. However, users who do not want to wait can manually check for the update directly on their smartwatch.

To do this, open the main menu on the Forerunner watch, go to System, then Software Update, and select Check for Updates. If the update is available for your device, it should appear there.

Public Beta Version 29.04 focuses mainly on bug fixes and performance improvements rather than adding major new features. One of the key fixes addresses an issue where personal strength records were not syncing correctly with Garmin Connect. This should help users who track gym workouts and strength training data through Garmin’s ecosystem.

The update also fixes a problem related to configuring heart rate and power data fields through Garmin Connect Mobile. For athletes who rely on accurate heart rate zones, running power, cycling power, or structured training data, this fix could make daily use smoother and more reliable.

Garmin also notes that the update includes various other bug fixes and general improvements, although the company has not provided a detailed breakdown of every change included in this beta release.

For owners of the Forerunner 165, 255, 265, 955, and 965, this update is a positive sign that Garmin is still actively refining the software experience across older models. These watches remain popular among runners, triathletes, cyclists, and fitness-focused users thanks to their strong GPS tracking, training metrics, battery life, and Garmin Connect integration.

Garmin has not yet confirmed when the stable version of the 29.xx software branch will be released to all users. For now, Public Beta Version 29.04 is limited to users participating in the Garmin Beta Program, and those who prefer a fully stable experience may want to wait for the final public rollout.

Still, this latest update shows Garmin’s continued commitment to improving its Forerunner smartwatch lineup, even for models that are no longer the newest in the range.
