Samsung is rolling out a surprisingly practical new camera feature called Ocean Mode, built to help everyday users capture clearer, more vibrant underwater photos and videos without needing specialized underwater photography experience.
The idea behind Ocean Mode is simple: underwater shots often look washed out, too blue or green, and blurry because of low light, water movement, and the way water affects color. Ocean Mode tackles these common problems with automatic adjustments that fine-tune white balance, colors, contrast, and motion blur so your underwater scenes look closer to what you saw in real life.
One of the most useful additions is an interval shooting option. Instead of trying to time the perfect shot while you’re swimming or snorkeling, Ocean Mode can automatically capture a photo every 2, 5, or 10 seconds. This makes it easier to get a series of usable images in situations where subjects move quickly, like fish, waves, or people in motion.
Samsung’s software also compensates for movement underwater by choosing a faster shutter speed when needed. That means less blur from shaky hands or shifting currents, which is one of the biggest reasons underwater photos often come out unusable.
It’s worth noting that while Ocean Mode is designed to improve underwater image quality, using a proper underwater housing is still recommended—especially in salt water—where extra protection can help prevent damage and corrosion.
With Ocean Mode, Samsung is aiming to make underwater photography more accessible, letting users focus on capturing the moment while the camera handles the tricky parts of shooting beneath the surface.
