Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra: bigger display, sharper AMOLED panel, and premium pricing
Samsung’s next book-style foldable is stepping into “Ultra” territory. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is positioned as the direct successor to the Galaxy Z Fold7, but this time Samsung is giving the device a more premium identity, a larger main display, improved camera hardware, and flagship-level performance.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is expected to launch with a starting price of 2,199 euros in Europe, $2,999 in Australia, and $2,099 in the United States. That places it firmly in the ultra-premium foldable phone category, where Samsung will need to convince buyers that the upgrades are worth the higher price.
One of the biggest changes is the new 8-inch internal display. Samsung is reportedly using a new AMOLED panel with a much sharper resolution of 2,504 x 2,256 pixels. For comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold7 featured a 2,184 x 1,968-pixel resolution. The aspect ratio remains 3:2, so users can expect a familiar tablet-like experience when the device is unfolded.
The 6.5-inch cover display appears to be mostly unchanged, but both screens are dynamic panels with refresh rates of up to 120 Hz. That means smoother scrolling, more responsive gaming, and a more fluid overall user experience whether the phone is open or closed.
Camera performance is also getting a notable boost. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra keeps a powerful 200-megapixel main camera with an f/1.7 aperture, which should help deliver detailed images and strong low-light performance. It also includes a 10-megapixel 3x telephoto camera with an f/2.4 aperture for zoom shots.
The biggest camera upgrade appears to be the ultra-wide sensor. Samsung is moving to a 50-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with an f/1.9 aperture, giving users more flexibility for landscape photos, group shots, architecture, and creative wide-angle photography. The selfie cameras remain 10-megapixel sensors with an f/2.2 aperture.
Powering the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, Samsung’s customized version of Qualcomm’s flagship chipset. It will be paired with 12 GB of RAM and storage options of 256 GB or 512 GB. The top-end 1 TB model is expected to include 16 GB of RAM, making it the best option for heavy multitasking, gaming, productivity, and long-term use.
Battery capacity is listed at 5,000 mAh, with support for 45-watt charging. While that is an improvement over many previous foldable designs, it may still feel conservative compared with some rival foldable phones from China, where much larger batteries are becoming more common. Samsung is expected to advertise up to 51 hours of battery life, which would be a noticeable gain over the previous generation.
The device is also listed with 1,200 charge cycles, which may be less impressive for users who plan to keep their foldable for several years. Still, Samsung appears to be focusing on efficiency improvements from the chipset and display rather than simply increasing battery size.
In terms of design, the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra continues Samsung’s push toward thinner and more refined foldable hardware. The body is rated IP48 for dust and water resistance, and the folded design is slightly slimmer than before, measuring 4.1 mm instead of 4.2 mm. While the difference is small, it shows Samsung is continuing to refine the engineering of its premium foldable lineup.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra uses a glass and aluminum body, with titanium layers beneath the display for added structural strength. It weighs 218 grams, making it slightly heavier than its predecessor, though still relatively light for a large foldable phone with an 8-inch internal screen.
Color options are expected to include Graphite, Cream, and Violet Shadow. Samsung is also preparing exclusive finishes, including Green Shadow, also referred to as Violet Green, for buyers who want a more distinctive look.
Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra looks like a careful refinement rather than a dramatic reinvention. The sharper 8-inch AMOLED display, upgraded 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chipset, and thinner foldable design all help strengthen its position as a high-end productivity and entertainment device.
However, the upgrades may feel limited for users expecting a major leap in battery capacity or charging speed. With its premium pricing, the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra will likely appeal most to loyal Samsung foldable fans, power users, and buyers who want one of the most advanced foldable smartphones available.
