Galaxy S27 and S27 Plus Could Fall Even Further Behind the Pro and Ultra

Samsung Galaxy S27 and S27 Plus may miss out on major selfie camera upgrade

Samsung’s next wave of foldable phones may be close to launch, but attention is already shifting toward the Galaxy S27 series. Although the lineup is still months away, fresh leaks are starting to paint a clearer picture of what Samsung may be planning for its next flagship phones. The latest rumor, however, may disappoint buyers hoping for a better front-facing camera on the standard Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27 Plus.

According to recent claims, Samsung is preparing a 16 MP selfie camera upgrade for the Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra. That would mark a notable change for the company’s premium Galaxy S phones, which have relied on a 12 MP front camera since the Galaxy S23 Ultra generation. The new sensor is rumored to use a square-style design, similar to the approach expected from Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro models.

However, it now appears that this upgrade may not come to every Galaxy S27 model. Tipster Lanzuk claims that the Galaxy S27 Pro is confirmed to receive the new 16 MP selfie camera, while the regular Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27 Plus are expected to stick with the older 12 MP sensor.

If accurate, this would create a bigger gap between Samsung’s standard and higher-end flagship models. Selfie cameras are becoming increasingly important for video calls, social media content, vlogging, and portrait shots, so keeping the same 12 MP hardware on the lower-tier models could feel underwhelming to some users.

That said, megapixels are only one part of the camera experience. Samsung could still improve the Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27 Plus selfie performance through better image processing, improved lenses, upgraded software, or enhanced AI-based photo features. For now, though, there is no clear information confirming whether those models will receive any meaningful front-camera improvements beyond the familiar 12 MP sensor.

This rumor also follows earlier claims that the base Galaxy S27 may use more affordable OLED panels sourced from Chinese suppliers. That move is reportedly aimed at reducing production costs, with Samsung potentially saving around $5 per display panel. While that may sound small, it can make a major difference when producing millions of devices.

At the same time, not all news surrounding the standard Galaxy S27 is negative. The entire Galaxy S27 series, including the base model, is rumored to feature UFS 5.0 storage. If true, this would bring faster read and write speeds, smoother app loading, improved multitasking, and better overall performance compared to current storage technology.

Based on the leaks so far, the Galaxy S27 Pro is shaping up to be one of the most interesting models in Samsung’s upcoming flagship lineup. While the Galaxy S27 Ultra will likely remain the most powerful and feature-packed option, the Pro model could inherit several premium upgrades without reaching the Ultra’s expected price point.

That could make the Galaxy S27 Pro the sweet spot for buyers who want a high-end Samsung phone with stronger camera hardware, faster performance, and flagship features, but do not necessarily need everything offered by the Ultra model.

For now, these details remain unofficial, and Samsung has not confirmed the Galaxy S27 specifications. Still, if the latest leaks prove accurate, the Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27 Plus may feel more like modest upgrades, while the Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra could be the models that receive Samsung’s most exciting improvements.
