The city of Fukui in Japan is introducing an innovative travel experience with the launch of the Wowride Ikoss Fukui Go, which has been heralded as the world’s first extended reality (XR) bus. This unique mode of transportation is set to bring an extraordinary visual experience to passengers by integrating virtual routes with the actual bus journey. As passengers travel from Fukumi Station to various key destinations, window and ceiling displays will immerse them in virtual previews of the attractions they are en route to visit.
The Wowride Ikoss Fukui Go bus is a collaborative initiative between the city of Fukui and Japan Railways West that aims to captivate visitors and locals alike. By employing XR technology, the bus provides an interactive and educational entertainment option that transforms the typical bus ride into an adventure. Unlike traditional XR experiences that require bulky headsets and can often lead to motion sickness or nausea, this experience can be enjoyed without such encumbrances, ensuring comfort for all passengers.
Under the direction of notable Japanese director Yukihiko Tsutsumi, who boasts a successful career including the TV drama Trick, each travel direction on the bus will offer a distinct virtual experience. The Wowride bus targets three main attractions: the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, the Ichijodani Asakura Family Site Museum, and the Awara Onsen, providing rich, context-specific virtual experiences tailored to each site.
The Wowride Ikoss Fukui Go is set to embark on its first rides from June 1, 2024. Ticket pricing is competitive, with fares set at 3,300 yen (approximately $22) on weekdays and 3,900 yen (around $26) on weekends for the hour-long dinosaur route. Other routes, which last between 30 and 50 minutes, are priced at 2,200 yen (roughly $14) regardless of the day of the week.
