Framework Unveils Its First eGPU, Bridging Laptop Portability and Desktop-Class Graphics with OCuLink

Framework is expanding what you can do with a modular laptop by introducing an OCuLink Developer Kit designed to bridge the gap between laptop-grade graphics and full desktop PCIe hardware. The big idea is flexibility: instead of being locked into one graphics setup, you can build a configuration that fits how you work or play today, then switch it up later without replacing your entire system.

At the center of this announcement are two dock options that bring OCuLink connectivity into the mix. First is the Graphics Module OCuLink Dock, which lets you use the removable graphics modules made for the Framework Laptop 16 as an external GPU. In other words, the same kind of laptop GPU module that normally installs inside the laptop can be used in an eGPU-style setup through the dock, opening up new ways to share gear across devices or create a more desktop-like workstation.

The second option is the PCIe OCuLink Dock, aimed at people who want even more freedom. This dock is built to connect conventional PCIe accessories, including standard desktop graphics cards. That means you can pair a laptop with a wide range of desktop-class components, from GPUs to other PCIe add-ins, depending on what you need the system to do.

A key takeaway is that the components are meant to be mixed and matched. Framework is positioning this as a modular toolbox rather than a one-size-fits-all accessory, allowing customers to assemble flexible setups based on their performance needs, upgrade plans, or budget.

Pricing and availability details for the OCuLink Developer Kit haven’t been confirmed yet, and the company says more information should appear soon on its official product page. One important note: the GPU module is not included and must be purchased separately. Framework’s current pricing for these modules is $399 for the AMD Radeon RX 7700S and $699 for the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 laptop GPU. For those leaning toward the PCIe dock route, a standard desktop graphics card can also be used, with examples including the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5060 at $329.
