Foxconn, Apple’s iPhone assembler, presses on with a North American EV launch

Foxconn doubles down on its electric vehicle ambitions in North America, confirming plans to launch its first EV, the Foxtron Model C crossover, before the end of 2025. Best known as the manufacturing powerhouse behind the iPhone, the Taiwanese electronics giant says the Model C is currently undergoing certification in the United States and that it remains committed to building EVs closer to its North American customers.

Despite new U.S. import rules for foreign-made EVs and changes to incentives, Foxconn says its roadmap is unchanged. For initial U.S. orders, production will begin in Taiwan, with the long-term goal of shifting Model C manufacturing to a U.S. facility once a suitable site is secured. As company spokesman James Wu put it, the plan remains on track: early production in Taiwan, eventual production in America.

At the same time, Foxconn is expanding its commercial EV footprint through a new partnership with Japan’s Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation. The collaboration focuses on battery-electric buses derived from Foxconn’s own platforms: the full-size Model T and the mid-size Model U people mover. Both vehicles were designed and engineered under Foxconn’s Foxtron brand, a joint venture with fellow Taiwanese automaker Yulon Motor. Development has been anchored at Foxconn’s EV battery plant in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, where the Model T is already in service and integrated into municipal fleets.

What this means for the market:
– A credible new entrant: Certification progress and a clear production plan signal that Foxconn is serious about becoming a North American EV player.
– Local manufacturing intent: The company’s search for a U.S. site shows a long-term strategy to mitigate import hurdles and serve regional demand.
– Commercial EV momentum: The Mitsubishi Fuso partnership leverages Foxconn’s existing bus platforms, potentially accelerating electric transit adoption.

With certification underway, a defined launch window, and a growing commercial lineup, Foxconn is positioning Foxtron as a brand to watch in both consumer and fleet EV segments.
