After a wave of departures from BioWare, including the entire writing team behind Dragon Age: The Veilguard, fresh news has surfaced about these writers transitioning to Sony’s highly anticipated sequel set in feudal Japan, titled Ghost of Yotei. This exciting project is once more being crafted by Sucker Punch Productions, backed by Sony, and is slated for a 2025 release exclusively on the PS5.
The intrigue builds as information gleaned from staff listings and LinkedIn profiles reveals that the game will be co-written by John Dombrow and Courtney Woods. These talented writers were key figures in the development of Dragon Age: The Veilguard before the team encountered significant layoffs and team reshuffles at Electronic Arts.
Ghost of Yotei has already captured attention due to its bold choice for a female protagonist. This character is brought to life by Erika Ishii, whose identity as genderfluid and her vocal presence on social media sparked considerable debate among fans of the original series. The change stirred up conversations about representation and narrative direction in gaming.
In the face of some gamer concerns regarding these creative choices, a former PlayStation executive responded with a straightforward message: those who disagree with the direction the game is taking are free to bypass it. Naturally, this statement fueled further heated discussions within the gaming community.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard, despite its tumultuous development, had already made its debut in October 2024 across a variety of platforms, including Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. The transition of its writing team to Ghost of Yotei adds an interesting twist to the development of both game franchises.
