Exclusive PS5 Ghost of Yotei Plates Not Available for Original Console Owners

PlayStation’s highly anticipated reveal of the Ghost of Yotei’s limited edition console plates has certainly stirred up excitement—and a bit of frustration. With Sony gearing up for the October 2 launch of Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Yotei, the company has unveiled a variety of special edition offerings to celebrate the release. These include two PS5 Slim bundles, matching DualSense controllers, and distinctive faceplates for both the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro.

The Ghost of Yotei faceplates are a visual treat, available in luxurious gold, inspired by the traditional Japanese art of kintsugi, and a striking black edition, influenced by sumi-e painting techniques. The black variant, adorned with bold brushstrokes symbolizing Atsu’s journey in the game, will be available through select retailers and PlayStation Direct.

However, this announcement hasn’t sat well with everyone. A considerable portion of the PS5 community—particularly those with the original launch variant—feels overlooked. These PS5 owners have voiced their disappointment online, emphasizing that Sony seems to cater primarily to the newer PS5 Slim and Pro models.

While the original PS5 has been discontinued as of late 2023, it remains prevalent, especially in secondary markets. This isn’t the first time Sony has bypassed original PS5 owners; in 2024, anniversary faceplates were also exclusive to Slim and Pro models, leaving early adopters out.

In response, some PS5 enthusiasts are considering third-party or unofficial faceplates, although these alternatives may not match the detail and authenticity of Sony’s branded options. There’s a silver lining for original PS5 users, though: they can still purchase the limited edition Ghost of Yotei controller, compatible with all PS5 models.

Emotions run high as fans grapple with the evolving landscape of console customization, yearning for recognition regardless of which PS5 version they own. As the community continues to buzz about this release, Sony’s choices are a reminder of the balancing act between innovation and inclusivity.
