NieR: Automata multiplayer mod

Fans Develop a NieR: Automata Multiplayer PvP Mod

Fans of the NieR video game series have taken their devotion to a new level by creating a remarkable multiplayer modification for NieR: Automata, one of the most popular games in the series to date. The innovative mod brings player-versus-player (PvP) action to the single-player experience, and it recently celebrated its first PvP tournament, which was broadcast live on Twitch for enthusiasts to enjoy.

During a significant event for the project, I had the honor of participating and even got a chance to converse with Jasper3108, the lead developer of the mod. Our discussion revealed intriguing insights into the creation and execution of this fan-made modification.

The mod began as a passion project, with Jasper3108 at the helm. There’s a fascinating development history behind this innovation. As Jasper explained, the concept had been touched upon as early as 2017, with a user by the name of Praydog initially paving the way by working on multiplayer functionality.

Jasper’s version, however, evolved significantly from that early attempt—they built upon Praydog’s open-source project, expanding the concept into something especially suited for competitive play. Jasper’s work infuses the game with a unique kind of netcode often seen in fighting games, which focuses on mirroring players’ inputs to reduce latency and desynchronization, rather than relying on the typical server-based approach that continuously syncs player positions and other game states.

In technical terms, the mod overhauls the game’s functions to create a smooth multiplayer experience and includes impressive features such as input-based netcode programming in Rust, a choice that diverges from the game’s original C++. This attention to detail ensures that every button press is mirrored precisely across both gaming systems to avoid the so-called “butterfly effect,” wherein even the smallest input discrepancy can create vastly different outcomes due to the game’s original design for a single camera and controller.

Despite some challenges, such as occasional desyncs or crashes, the mod has been praised by fans for its innovation and engaging gameplay in an already critically acclaimed title. It’s an unconventional modding endeavor that pushes the boundaries of what players can experience in NieR: Automata.

Currently, Jasper3108, alongside collaborators like Izardy, Ken Masters, and RutsuKun, continues to advance the mod with improvements and potential features such as auto lock-on options. Their dedication to transforming this single-player title into a multiplayer experience underscores the creative potential within gaming communities.

The NieR: Automata PvP modification is already accessible to the public. Enthusiasts can venture onto the mod’s Discord server to download and install it, while the project’s progress and installation specifics are systematically detailed in the server’s appropriate channels.

NieR: Automata’s standing as a high-quality game is undeniable. It garnered significant accolades upon its release, notably our Game of the Year and Community Game of the Year for 2017, and is available across major platforms, including Windows PC (via Steam), PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Its predecessor, NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139…, is also accessible on similar platforms and continues to garner praise among players old and new.
