Facebook to Transform All Videos into Reels for Enhanced Sharing

Facebook is set to transform the way users share videos on its platform by soon converting all videos into reels, regardless of their length or orientation. This shift means that users will no longer need to choose between a traditional video post and a reel; everything will be seamlessly shared as a reel. Additionally, the “Video” tab will be rebranded as the “Reels” tab.

In the upcoming months, Facebook aims to simplify the video-sharing experience by doing away with current length or format restrictions on reels, which are currently capped at 90 seconds. This change is intended to streamline how users interact with video content, similar to a move made by Instagram in 2022 when it started converting videos shorter than 15 minutes into reels.

Facebook outlined the motivation for these updates, emphasizing a more cohesive publishing experience that integrates creative tools across the board. Users will retain control over who sees their reels, with audience settings allowing them to choose between public, friends-only, or custom visibility.

However, this change may present challenges. Some users might find it inconvenient if horizontal videos are displayed in a vertical format or if short and long videos are combined indiscriminately.

To address these concerns, Facebook will ensure that default settings for sharing videos will be the same for both the Feed and reels. Users will receive a prompt to confirm who can view their reels once the changes take effect.

Despite these alterations, Facebook reassures users that its platform will continue to accommodate a wide variety of video content, from short clips to longer segments and live streams. The updates are set to roll out gradually across the globe in the coming months.
