Sony’s shifting focus away from PlayStation exclusives has left many fans disheartened. Recent job postings hinting at more cross-platform titles have only fueled the fire. A former Bend Studio developer, Robert Morrison, has voiced his thoughts, suggesting a stronger emphasis on single-player exclusives for the PS5.
Morrison, a senior animator with experience on blockbuster titles like God of War and The Last of Us, was laid off in early 2025. Despite suspicions that he might hold a grudge against Sony, his comments have resonated positively with many gamers.
In his post, Morrison advocates for keeping “PlayStation games on PlayStation,” a clear response to the trend of PC ports and unexpected Xbox releases like Helldivers 2. Meanwhile, Microsoft has embraced cross-platform gaming, reaping success on PlayStation Store charts, though critics argue this was a necessary strategy due to lackluster console sales.
Some analysts warn that reducing PlayStation exclusives could diminish the console’s appeal. Although Sony still entices buyers with the PS5 and PS5 Pro, the debut of fewer first-party games and the move to multi-platform releases might weaken its market position.
Sony’s strategic direction regarding Xbox, Switch 2, and PC remains uncertain. In June, PlayStation executive Herman Hulst sought to alleviate concerns by affirming the importance of single-player experiences, as reported by Video Games Chronicle.
Industry insiders like NateTheHate and Christopher Dring speculate that more PS5 games might land on Xbox consoles soon. While live-service games are likely candidates, time will ultimately reveal Sony’s trajectory in this evolving landscape.
