Exciting changes are on the horizon for AMD as the company plans to introduce the AM6 socket, maintaining the same size as its predecessor but boasting significantly more pins. Scheduled for a 2028 release alongside the Zen 7 processors, the AM6 socket will include an impressive 2100 pins, a 22% increase from the current 1718 pins on the AM5 socket. This advancement in pin density promises to enhance power delivery and boost I/O bandwidth without increasing the socket’s physical size.
AMD’s decision to extend the AM5 socket’s lifespan means Zen 6 processors will be compatible with the existing platform, ensuring continuity for current users. But the launch of the Zen 7 series will bring the AM6 into play, offering new opportunities for performance enhancements.
The retention of the socket’s size suggests that coolers compatible with AM5 will likely fit the AM6 as well, allowing for a smooth transition and potentially reducing the need for immediate upgrades. However, as cooler manufacturers work to accommodate the new chiplet layout, updated versions may still emerge.
With the increased pin count, there’s the potential for the AM6 to handle sustained power delivery above 200W, surpassing the AM5’s capacity of 170W. This change could introduce more data lanes, raising the possibility of PCIe Gen 6.0 support on these new motherboards. While mainstream adoption of PCIe 6.0 may be some years away, AMD could be setting the stage for future-proofing upcoming releases.
