Energizer’s Child-Resistant Batteries for AirTags and Watches Take Aim at Safer Homes

Energizer is rolling out a new line of coin cell batteries designed with child safety in mind, adding multiple layers of protection to help prevent dangerous battery ingestion incidents. These small button batteries are commonly used in everyday devices like Apple AirTag trackers, watches, and other compact electronics, which makes improving safety features especially important for families with young children.

The new Energizer coin cell batteries introduce three child-focused safety upgrades. First is a bitter-tasting coating, a feature that has appeared on some batteries before and is meant to trigger an immediate “yuck” reaction so a child is more likely to spit the battery out rather than swallow it.

Second, Energizer is using packaging that is intentionally difficult for children to open. Since many accidents begin before a battery ever reaches a device, harder-to-open packaging can add a meaningful barrier by slowing access and encouraging adult supervision when batteries are being replaced.

The third feature is what Energizer calls a “color alarm.” If the battery comes into contact with saliva, it can turn the mouth blue within seconds. The idea is to give parents or caregivers a fast, highly visible warning sign that a child may have put a coin battery in their mouth and could be at risk of swallowing it, helping adults respond quickly.

Energizer says the Ultimate Child Shield batteries will be available in CR2016, CR2024, and CR2032 sizes, covering many of the most commonly used coin cell formats. Pricing and a confirmed in-store availability date haven’t been announced yet, but the company has indicated more details about the Ultimate Child Shield features are available through its official product information.
