DRAM Prices Soar as AI Demand Turns Korean Memory Chips Into a Gold-Level Commodity

The global race to build AI infrastructure is pushing memory chip prices to extraordinary levels. In South Korea, DRAM has become so valuable that one kilogram of exported memory chips is now worth nearly the same as 620 grams of 24-karat gold.

The dramatic price jump reflects just how tight the global memory market has become. Demand for high-performance computing, AI servers, data centers, and next-generation electronics has surged, while supply remains constrained. As a result, DRAM prices have climbed by triple-digit percentages, reshaping the semiconductor industry and affecting everything from smartphones and laptops to AI servers and graphics systems.

According to data from Korea’s Trade Statistics Promotion Institute, the export unit price of DRAM between August 1 and August 20 reached $92,183 per kilogram, equal to roughly 127 million Korean won. That represents a staggering 401% increase compared with the previous year. The figure is also about 12.5 times higher than the price recorded in January 2023, when the AI boom was still in its early stages following the public launch of ChatGPT in late 2022.

To put that into perspective, recent Korean gold market pricing shows that 620 grams of 24-karat gold costs around 126.6 million Korean won. In other words, a kilogram of DRAM chips produced in Korea is now valued at nearly the same level as more than half a kilogram of pure gold.

The surge highlights how central memory chips have become to the modern technology economy. DRAM is a critical component in PCs, servers, smartphones, graphics cards, AI accelerators, and enterprise data centers. As artificial intelligence workloads expand, the need for faster and higher-capacity memory has increased sharply, putting intense pressure on global supply.

South Korea sits at the heart of this market. SK hynix and Samsung are two of the world’s largest DRAM producers, while Micron remains a major U.S.-based competitor. Together, these companies dominate the global memory chip industry. With demand rising faster than supply, the market has shifted strongly in favor of memory manufacturers.

The price boom has already produced major financial benefits for leading chipmakers. SK hynix and Samsung have reportedly issued generous employee bonuses after benefiting from the powerful rebound in memory prices. Workers at Micron’s Taiwan operations are also said to be watching the situation closely, with expectations that similar compensation discussions could emerge as profits improve across the sector.

However, the soaring cost of memory is also creating challenges for companies that depend on DRAM and related components. Consumer electronics brands, PC makers, server manufacturers, and AI hardware suppliers are all facing higher procurement costs.

Apple is among the companies reportedly affected by the rise in memory prices. The company increased prices on several products earlier this year, and memory costs are believed to be one of the factors influencing the broader pricing environment. Apple has also been reported to be pushing for greater access to memory chips from China’s CXMT, a fast-growing Chinese memory supplier seeking to gain a stronger position in the global DRAM market.

CXMT has attracted significant attention in China as the country works to reduce reliance on foreign semiconductor suppliers. Its market ambitions have grown at a time when memory shortages are giving alternative suppliers a chance to compete more aggressively. Still, the global DRAM market remains heavily concentrated around established players in South Korea and the United States.

The impact is also being felt in the PC and gaming laptop market. Some manufacturers are adjusting product designs and procurement strategies to manage rising component expenses. For example, certain newer gaming laptops are combining older DDR4 memory with newer DDR5 configurations, allowing manufacturers to balance performance and cost in a difficult supply environment.

AI server pricing may also be affected. Reports suggest that future server systems built around NVIDIA’s upcoming Rubin GPUs could see price increases of around 15% to 17%, with memory accounting for a major portion of the overall bill of materials. Since advanced AI systems require large amounts of high-speed memory, any increase in DRAM and high-bandwidth memory pricing can quickly raise the final cost of complete server platforms.

The situation underscores a major shift in the technology supply chain. For years, memory chips were known for cyclical price swings, with periods of oversupply often pushing prices down. But the rapid expansion of AI data centers has changed the demand outlook. Cloud providers, enterprise AI firms, chip designers, and hardware manufacturers are all competing for advanced memory at the same time.

This has turned DRAM into one of the most strategically important components in the global semiconductor market. As AI models become larger and more complex, memory capacity and bandwidth are becoming just as important as raw computing power. That makes DRAM, DDR5, and high-bandwidth memory essential to the next phase of artificial intelligence development.

Gold has traditionally been viewed as a safe-haven asset during times of economic uncertainty, currency weakness, and geopolitical tension. Yet the fact that Korean DRAM exports can now be compared with gold by weight shows how valuable semiconductor technology has become in the AI era.

If demand for AI infrastructure continues to rise, memory prices may remain elevated for some time. For chipmakers, that could mean stronger profits and further investment in production capacity. For device makers and consumers, however, it may mean higher prices for laptops, smartphones, servers, gaming PCs, and AI hardware.

The message from the market is clear: memory chips are no longer just another component. In the age of artificial intelligence, DRAM has become a premium resource, and its value is now being measured against one of the world’s oldest symbols of wealth.
