Garmin Fenix 7 gets new beta update to fix unexpected shutdowns
Garmin may have already moved on to newer flagship smartwatch generations, but the Fenix 7 series is still receiving active software support. Even though the Fenix 7 lineup is now two generations behind the latest models, Garmin continues to roll out updates aimed at improving stability, reliability, and everyday performance for users of its older premium watches.
The latest release is Beta Version 27.17, a new software update for the Garmin Fenix 7 series and other compatible high-end wearables. This update focuses on fixing an issue that could cause some watches to shut down unexpectedly when using the Broadcast HR feature.
Broadcast HR is a useful tool for athletes who want to share heart rate data from their Garmin watch with other devices, such as cycling computers, fitness equipment, or compatible training apps. Because many users rely on this feature during workouts, an unexpected shutdown could be especially frustrating. Garmin’s new beta update is designed to address that problem and make the experience more stable.
At the moment, Garmin’s Fenix 7 series is still on stable Software Version 26.09. That update arrived in April and delivered multiple changes and improvements to the Fenix 7 lineup, as well as related models such as the Enduro 2 and Epix 2. Since then, Garmin has been developing the next major software branch through its public beta program.
Earlier this month, Garmin began testing the v27.xx update cycle with Beta Version 27.15. That release included five bug fixes, one of which targeted a shutdown issue linked to navigation features. With Beta Version 27.17, Garmin is now tackling another separate shutdown bug, this time related to heart rate broadcasting.
The new beta update is being distributed over the air to users enrolled in Garmin’s Beta Program. If the update has not appeared automatically on your smartwatch, you can manually check for it directly from the device.
To do this, open the main menu on your Fenix 7, go to System, select Software Update, and then choose Check for Updates. If Beta Version 27.17 is available for your device, the watch should begin the download and installation process.
Garmin has not yet confirmed when the v27.xx software branch will be released as a stable update for all users. For now, it remains part of the company’s beta testing program, meaning it is mainly intended for users who are comfortable trying pre-release software.
Still, the continued support is good news for Fenix 7 owners. Garmin’s premium smartwatches are built for long-term use, and regular software updates help extend their lifespan by fixing bugs, improving features, and keeping performance dependable over time.
For athletes, hikers, runners, cyclists, and everyday users who still rely on the Fenix 7 series, Beta Version 27.17 is another sign that Garmin has not forgotten its older flagship watches. While the newest models may be getting the spotlight, the Fenix 7 remains a capable and well-supported smartwatch.
