DRAM Crunch Could Disrupt Apple’s A20 Pro Supply and Put iPhone 18 Pro Launch at Risk

According to information shared by analyst Tim Culpan, TSMC is said to be holding more than one billion dollars’ worth of Apple A20 Pro ARM processors that are currently waiting for compatible RAM. In simple terms, Apple may have a large supply of next-generation chips ready, but not enough DRAM to pair with them for millions of upcoming iPhones.

The shortage comes at a difficult time for the smartphone industry. DRAM is essential for device performance, multitasking, and overall system speed, making it a critical component in high-end smartphones. With the iPhone 18 Pro series expected to rely on Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, securing enough memory is vital for mass production.

Apple reportedly attempted to bring Chinese memory maker CXMT into its supply chain, but those talks are believed to have fallen apart over pricing disagreements. As a result, Apple remains dependent on major memory suppliers such as SK Hynix, Micron, and Samsung.

The bigger problem is that these memory manufacturers are increasingly focusing on server-grade memory, which is in high demand due to the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and data center expansion. Server memory is also more profitable than consumer DRAM, making it a higher priority for suppliers. This shift is leaving consumer electronics companies, including Apple, competing for limited memory capacity.

The impact is already being felt across Apple’s product lineup. Certain MacBook Air models have reportedly become harder to find at short notice, suggesting that the memory crunch is not limited to the upcoming iPhone range.

If Apple cannot secure enough DRAM in time, the iPhone 18 Pro launch could face two possible outcomes: a delayed release or limited stock at launch. A shortage could also contribute to higher production costs, which may be passed on to customers through a noticeable price increase.

For buyers waiting for Apple’s next flagship iPhone, this could mean higher prices, longer delivery times, or difficulty finding preferred models and storage configurations immediately after launch. The most powerful versions, such as the iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Ultra, may be especially vulnerable if Apple prioritizes limited components for its highest-margin devices.

While Apple has not confirmed any delays or supply issues, the situation highlights how dependent modern smartphone launches are on the global semiconductor and memory supply chain. Even a company with Apple’s scale and purchasing power can face challenges when key components become scarce.
