A new rumor suggests Valve is targeting 2028 for the next-generation Steam Deck. The claim comes from hardware watcher KeplerL2, who briefly stated on the NeoGAF forum that “Steam Deck 2 is 2028.” While short on details, the timing lines up with earlier comments from Valve’s Lawrence Yang, who said a true successor would only arrive once meaningful performance gains were achievable beyond the Steam Deck OLED.
If accurate, a 2028 window signals a longer refresh cadence for Valve’s handheld lineup, giving future AMD APU designs and process nodes time to mature. That extra headroom could enable the kind of step-change in performance, efficiency, and battery life Valve has indicated it wants before calling anything “next-gen.”
The original Steam Deck launched in February 2022 and quickly became a standout in the handheld PC space, pairing a custom AMD APU with SteamOS and Proton compatibility for a console-like experience. The OLED refresh in November 2023 improved display quality and efficiency thanks to a 6 nm revision, but it intentionally avoided a full hardware overhaul—underscoring Valve’s philosophy of saving the big jump for a true generational update.
