Dell mocked for Apple-like naming scheme with Dell Pro, Dell Pro Max

Dell’s New PC Naming Strategy Draws Comparisons to Apple’s iPhone, but Is It Really for Simplicity?

Dell has recently unveiled a new lineup of laptops, showcasing not only significant enhancements in performance but also a revamped design approach. However, what stole the spotlight at their press launch was a naming strategy that seems to mirror Apple’s iPhone lineup. This intriguing shift from Dell has sparked reactions, with attendees at the event humorously pointing out the similarity.

Gone are the beloved sub-brands like XPS and Inspiron. Instead, Dell has opted for a streamlined approach, categorizing their latest offerings into three tiers: Dell, Dell Pro, and Dell Pro Max. Such a move is reminiscent of Apple’s branding, notably echoing the familiar cadence of iPhone editions.

Dell defends this choice by emphasizing clarity and ease for consumers. According to Jeff Clarke, Chief Operating Officer, customers lean towards names that are memorable and easy to articulate. The goal, as stated, is to eliminate the confusion often associated with their previous branding by simplifying the nomenclature.

Despite this intended clarity, some skeptics question the wisdom of borrowing directly from Apple’s playbook. The branding approach has been met with some public bemusement. Remarks from the audience highlighted the lack of originality and the apparent adherence to Apple’s established pattern.

Further complicating matters, each tier under Dell’s new structure is divided into three additional subdivisions: Base, Plus, and Premium. This additional layer might counteract the simplicity they intended to achieve, leaving users with a somewhat complex landscape of choices within each category.

As this new direction unfolds, it raises the question of whether other popular names from Apple’s vast portfolio, like “Air” and “mini”, might find their way into Dell’s future nomenclature. It will be interesting to see how consumers respond and whether the new strategy will enhance Dell’s market presence or simply blend into the echo of an already well-established brand.
