Cybertruck’s Limited Hardware Prohibits Steam Gaming, Despite Elon Musk’s Initial Certainty

In the early anticipation phase of Tesla’s Cybertruck, Elon Musk sparked excitement with his confident response to whether the electric pickup would be able to run the popular video game Cyberpunk 2077. He affirmed “100%” the possibility in a discussion concerning Tesla’s efforts to integrate the entire Steam gaming library into its vehicles.

However, the reality that has unfolded since the Cybertruck became widely available is that this assurance may have been premature. While Tesla made strides by incorporating Steam into its high-end Model S and Model X vehicles—which come with the necessary 256GB storage and 16GB RAM, as well as an AMD Ryzen APU with an RDNA 2-based GPU providing a respectable 10 teraflops of graphics power—the Cybertruck appears to have been left behind in this gaming revolution.

Information provided by a known Tesla hacker suggests that the Hardware 4.0 system in the Cybertruck is equipped with just 8GB RAM and 128GB storage, falling short of the basic requirements for running Steam. Despite Steam support seemingly being included in the firmware, the implementation is currently non-existent, with no reports of Cyberpunk 2077 or other Steam games being played on Cybertruck’s infotainment systems.

Moreover, the discovery of Cybertruck’s impressive 18-inch display resolution of 2650 x 1440 adds a level of disappointment for fans hoping to utilize the high-quality screen for gaming. The vehicle’s current hardware constraints mean that the Steam gaming experience promised by Musk is not yet a reality for Cybertruck owners.

There remains the possibility that Tesla could offer retrofit upgrades, similar to those it provided for older Model S and X vehicles, which may eventually enable the full gaming capabilities initially promised. Until then, those seeking to play titles like the Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition will need to look towards other platforms, such as the PlayStation 5, to fully enjoy immersive gaming experiences.
