Cyberpunk 2077 Live-Action Movie Is in Development at Paramount Pictures
Cyberpunk 2077 is officially moving closer to the big screen. Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action movie set in the world of CD Projekt Red’s hit sci-fi RPG, bringing the neon-soaked streets of Night City to a new format after years of success in gaming and animation.
The project is still in its early development stage, so major details remain under wraps. Paramount has not yet confirmed a director, cast, release date, or storyline. It is also unknown whether the Cyberpunk 2077 movie will adapt the game’s main plot or explore a brand-new story within the same dystopian universe.
Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached to the film alongside CD Projekt Red, the Polish studio behind Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher series. Di Bonaventura is known for producing large-scale franchise films, including Transformers and G.I. Joe, making him a notable name for a project with blockbuster potential.
Cyberpunk 2077 takes place in Night City, a sprawling futuristic metropolis in California controlled by powerful corporations, crime syndicates, and cyber-enhanced outlaws. The game follows V, a mercenary whose life changes after becoming connected to the digital consciousness of Johnny Silverhand, a rebellious rockstar and anti-corporate figure. As Johnny’s personality begins to take over V’s mind, the two are pulled into a dangerous conflict involving the powerful Arasaka Corporation.
Whether the movie will bring V and Johnny Silverhand to theaters or introduce a completely new set of characters remains one of the biggest unanswered questions. Night City is a rich setting filled with mercenaries, hackers, corporate wars, underground gangs, and stories of survival, giving the filmmakers plenty of room to build something fresh while staying true to the franchise’s identity.
The Cyberpunk universe has already proven it can succeed beyond video games. The animated series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners became a major hit and helped renew interest in the franchise, showing that Night City’s brutal, stylish, and emotional storytelling can work powerfully in other media.
Cyberpunk 2077 has also grown into one of CD Projekt Red’s most successful releases. After its troubled launch in 2020, the game received major updates, improvements, and new content that helped reshape its reputation. It has reportedly sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, while its acclaimed Phantom Liberty expansion has sold around 15 million copies.
Paramount’s move into Cyberpunk 2077 also fits into Hollywood’s growing interest in video game adaptations. The studio is developing other game-based projects as well, including a Street Fighter film with Legendary and a Call of Duty movie with Peter Berg involved as director and co-writer alongside Taylor Sheridan.
For now, the Cyberpunk 2077 live-action movie remains in the planning phase. Production has not started, and fans may need to wait a while before seeing Night City on the big screen. Still, the combination of Paramount Pictures, CD Projekt Red, and one of modern gaming’s most recognizable sci-fi worlds makes this one of the most exciting upcoming video game movie adaptations to watch.
