CXMT DDR5 Memory Reportedly Reaches 90% Yield as Chinese Chipmaker Gains Ground

Chinese memory manufacturer CXMT is reportedly making significant progress with its DDR5 DRAM chips, marking another step forward for China’s growing semiconductor industry. According to reports from Chinese media, the company’s DDR5 memory chips, said to be produced using a 17-nanometer class process, have reached a yield rate of around 90%.

That figure is important because higher yields mean more usable chips can be produced from each wafer, helping reduce costs and improve supply. For CXMT, reaching this level could make it easier to ship DDR5 memory in larger quantities and compete more aggressively in the PC memory market.

CXMT has become an increasingly watched name in the memory chip sector as China looks to strengthen its domestic semiconductor supply chain. Demand from local device makers has been rising, and global memory shortages in recent years have pushed many companies to explore additional suppliers.

The report claims that several PC manufacturers have already started using CXMT memory chips in their products. Acer and ASUS are said to be among the more active adopters, mainly using these chips in systems sold in Mainland China and emerging markets.

However, adoption appears to vary widely depending on the company and region. Dell is reportedly avoiding the use of CXMT chips entirely, while HP is said to be using them only in products intended for the Mainland China market. This cautious approach reflects the sensitive position many global PC brands face as they balance supply chain needs, regional demand, and geopolitical pressure.

Apple has also previously been reported to have shown interest in using CXMT memory for products sold in China, as part of a strategy to reduce exposure to memory supply constraints. While such a move could help Apple diversify its supplier base, it would likely remain limited to China-focused devices due to regulatory and political considerations.

Despite the reported progress, CXMT still faces major challenges. The global DRAM market is dominated by Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and Micron, three companies with advanced manufacturing capabilities, deep customer relationships, and huge production capacity. These companies produce cutting-edge DDR5 chips using more advanced process technologies, including 10-nanometer class nodes and, in some cases, extreme ultraviolet lithography.

CXMT’s reported 17-nanometer DDR5 process is less advanced than the latest nodes used by leading global memory makers. Even with strong yields, the company may still face hurdles in matching the power efficiency, performance, density, and scale offered by its larger rivals.

Another major obstacle is access to advanced chipmaking equipment. Due to export restrictions and sanctions, Chinese semiconductor companies can face limits in obtaining the latest lithography tools and other manufacturing technologies. This could slow CXMT’s ability to move to more advanced production nodes in the future.

Still, a 90% yield for DDR5 memory would be a meaningful achievement if confirmed. It suggests that CXMT is improving its manufacturing maturity and could become a more important supplier for China’s PC and electronics market. For local manufacturers, a stronger domestic DRAM supplier could help reduce dependence on foreign memory giants and provide more flexibility in sourcing components.

For now, CXMT’s role in the global DDR5 memory market remains limited compared with the industry leaders. But its progress highlights the steady push by Chinese chipmakers to expand beyond lower-end components and enter more advanced semiconductor segments.

As demand for DDR5 memory continues to grow across laptops, desktops, servers, and AI-related hardware, CXMT’s development will be closely watched. If the company can improve performance, expand production, and navigate technology restrictions, it could become a more serious competitor in the memory industry over the coming years.
