China’s largest memory maker is reportedly breaking through the high-bandwidth memory bottleneck by shipping HBM3 samples to domestic AI leaders such as Huawei. For a market that has grappled with limited access to advanced memory due to export controls and supply shortages, this move signals a crucial step toward stabilizing China’s AI hardware ecosystem.
Industry reports indicate these HBM3 samples serve as an early phase in a broader ramp-up to volume production expected later this year. While the company remains three to four years behind top global competitors in cutting-edge HBM technology, analysts view the progress as a meaningful stride toward semiconductor self-reliance and a challenge to the long-standing dominance of international DRAM leaders.
Capacity is a key advantage. The firm’s DRAM output is steadily expanding and is projected to reach roughly 230,000 to 280,000 wafers per month across its Chinese facilities. That scale matters: AI chip designers like Huawei and Cambricon need reliable, domestic sources of high-bandwidth memory to build and deploy next-generation accelerators at speed.
On the technology roadmap, the company plans to introduce HBM3E to the Chinese market by 2027. This timeline likely places it a generation behind if HBM4 becomes mainstream by then, but it would still represent a substantial improvement for local AI infrastructure. In parallel, the manufacturer has broadened its footprint in consumer memory by initiating DDR5 module production, reportedly achieving around 80% yields—an indicator that process maturity is moving in the right direction.
Financing may further accelerate the push. A potential initial public offering targeted for the first quarter of 2026 could unlock capital for new tools, capacity, and advanced packaging—areas essential to commercializing high-bandwidth memory at scale.
For China’s AI sector, HBM has been one of the toughest hurdles after core chip production. By moving HBM3 from lab samples toward commercial readiness, the country is narrowing a critical gap in its AI supply chain. The broader message is clear: Beijing is pressing ahead to build a homegrown stack for AI computation, reducing exposure to external constraints while positioning domestic champions for rapid growth in data centers, training clusters, and edge AI deployments.
