As Rivian continues to shape the electric vehicle market with its R1T and R1S models, a recent concern has emerged for owners of these vehicles. A report highlights an emerging issue involving the front upper control arm of the Rivian R1T electric pickup truck, which has raised alarms among owners.
A troubling trend has been observed where service centers may not be correctly tightening the bolts on the front upper control arm during maintenance procedures. This concern extends beyond routine service appointments as there have been accounts from owners, including online forum discussions, revealing that some new R1Ts were delivered with bolts on the upper control arms that were not properly secured.
One such case involved a Rivian owner who shared their vehicle service experience online. After receiving service for their R1T, which included adjustments to the tonneau cover among other items, they encountered a severe issue the very next day. Driving over railroad tracks led to the vehicle’s wheel shifting abruptly, an event that seems to point to a service-related oversight, where the upper control arm bolt came loose, eventually falling out.
Although there have thankfully been no reported injuries from these upper control arm failures, the concern remains significant, especially when reflecting on a 2022 recall by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The earlier recall highlighted issues with the upper control arms and their connection to the steering knuckle, which posed a safety threat at even lower speeds.
Presently, there have been no official updates or resolutions provided to the public regarding the current issue faced by owners discussing their experiences online. Notwithstanding, it is anticipated that Rivian will take appropriate actions, such as replacing any damaged components, particularly for those with newly purchased vehicles demonstrating these defects.
Vehicular safety and reliability are paramount for both manufacturers and consumers, and it is essential for service providers to ensure that all procedures are performed correctly to maintain trust and safeguard the driving experience. For Rivian owners affected by this issue, monitoring forums and official statements for updates and possible recall information is recommended. Additionally, owners should immediately report any suspected problems related to the vehicle’s control arms or other critical components to ensure prompt service and resolution.
