Leaked images have surfaced online suggesting a potential first look at the highly anticipated Rivian R2 platform. While Rivian has previously offered a glimpse of the crossover SUV, detailed knowledge is primarily sourced from various internet leaks and rumors. A recent post shared on Reddit by user u/New-Enthusiasm claims to showcase the Rivian R2 crossover, albeit in a somewhat unclear form.
The images depict two Rivian electric vehicles purported to be the Rivian R1S and the yet-to-be-released R2 crossover, captured during what seems to be a product photo shoot. There have been discussions regarding the size of the R2, which has been advertised as a smaller, more affordable alternative to the R1S. The leaked photos, however, present a vehicle that looks remarkably similar in size to the existing R1S model.
Despite the R2’s reported size resemblance to the R1S, differences in design can be observed, including alterations to the daytime running lights, the absence of certain trim elements, and a repositioned charging port. The pictures suggest a notably shorter rear overhang for the R2 compared to that of the R1S, providing some support to the argument that these images indeed showcase the R2 variant.
An initial analysis of the images reveals only a minimal height difference between the R1S and this new model—approximately 2–3%. This could indicate either the R2 or potentially a refreshed version of the R1S, reminiscent of the Ford Bronco Sport.
Further analysis highlights the resemblance of the SUV to a design featured in a Rivian patent earlier this year, which many believe is associated with the R2 model. It remains challenging to compare the wheelbases or overall lengths of the vehicles due to the angle of the images, though the wheelbases appear to be very similar. The possibility that the R2 SUV shares a similar height with the R1S could indicate that Rivian is maintaining a focus on off-road performance with its new model.
With speculation circulating, Rivian enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the company’s live event in California on March 7, when it is expected that the R2 SUV will be officially revealed, providing clarity on the vehicle’s design and specifications.
For those interested in adding to their collection, an official Rivian R1T Matchbox die-cast model is available for purchase through various retailers.
