A new mini PC called the AI Pyramid Computing Box (AX8850) is now available to order, and it’s clearly built with one big goal in mind: running AI models locally instead of relying on cloud services. With its unusual pyramid-inspired design, built-in audio hardware, and a strip of RGB lighting, it looks more like a futuristic AI appliance than a typical desktop computer.
At the heart of the system is the Axera AX8850 system-on-chip, featuring eight Cortex-A55 CPU cores paired with an NPU rated at 24 TOPS (Int8). That dedicated AI performance is designed for tasks like local image analysis without the need for an online subscription or sending data to remote servers—an appealing idea for users who care about privacy, latency, or offline use.
Pricing starts at $199, and the entry-level configuration comes with 4GB of RAM. While that base memory option may be limiting for heavier on-device AI workloads, the platform is positioned as an affordable way to experiment with edge AI, local inference, and automation projects without stepping up to much more expensive hardware.
Even though it can function like a regular compact desktop, its connectivity makes it especially interesting for multi-display monitoring, light workstation setups, or embedded deployments.
