Claude Opus 5 starts showing up on some free accounts with a three-message trial
Claude users on the free tier may soon notice something unexpected in their model selector: Claude Opus 5. The advanced AI model was previously available only through paid Claude plans and API access, but it has now begun appearing for select free users without any official announcement from Anthropic.
The rollout appears to be limited and experimental. Some free accounts are seeing Opus 5 listed with a “3 free” label, along with a banner indicating that they can try the model for three messages without upgrading. However, this is not showing up for everyone, and there does not appear to be a manual way to enable it.
Claude Sonnet 5 launched on June 30 and was made available to all Claude users, including those on the Free plan. Claude Opus 5 followed on July 24 as a more powerful model, but Anthropic kept it restricted to paid subscriptions and API users. Now, nearly two months later, that restriction seems to be loosening slightly for a small number of free accounts.
The free Opus 5 access is very limited. Each message sent to Claude Opus 5 reduces the trial counter by one. For example, after two prompts, the interface shows that only one free Opus 5 message remains. Once all three messages are used, the model is no longer available on that free account.
One important detail is that this trial does not appear to work like Claude’s standard usage limits. Normally, Claude’s free message allowance resets after a five-hour window. In this case, the three-message Opus 5 trial does not seem to return after the usual reset period. That suggests the offer may be a one-time preview rather than a recurring free allowance.
Anthropic has not publicly explained how users are being selected for the trial. There is no sign-up option, no setting to activate it, and no confirmed eligibility criteria. Most free users still see an upgrade prompt next to Claude Opus 5, meaning the model remains locked unless they subscribe to a paid plan.
For now, this looks more like a quiet test than a full expansion of Claude Opus 5 to the Free plan. Anthropic may be experimenting with limited free access to let users experience the more capable model before deciding whether to upgrade. It is also possible the company is testing demand, server load, or user behavior before making any broader changes.
Claude Opus 5 is considered one of Anthropic’s higher-end AI models, aimed at more complex reasoning, writing, coding, and analysis tasks. Giving free users even a short trial could help showcase its advantages over standard free-tier models. However, with only three messages available, users who receive the offer will need to choose their prompts carefully.
At this stage, free Claude users should not expect guaranteed access to Opus 5. If the “3 free” label appears in the model selector, it likely means the account has been included in the limited trial. If it does not appear, there is currently no known way to request or unlock it.
Until Anthropic shares more details, the three-message Claude Opus 5 trial remains a quiet and selective test. It gives some free users a brief look at the premium model, but it does not yet mean Opus 5 has officially joined Claude’s regular Free plan.
