Claude Haiku 5.5: Anthropic’s Speediest AI Model Is Now Free to Try

Anthropic Launches Claude Haiku 5.5 as Its Fastest Free AI Model Yet

Anthropic has officially introduced Claude Haiku 5.5, a new lightweight AI model designed for speed, affordability, and everyday use. Released on October 7, the model succeeds Claude Haiku 4.5 and is now available across Claude’s free and paid plans, including web, iOS, and Android apps.

The biggest surprise is that Claude Haiku 5.5 is not locked behind a premium subscription. Free Claude users can access it alongside Claude Sonnet 5.5, giving them two current-generation models without paying. In the Claude model picker, Haiku 5.5 is positioned as the fastest option, sitting below Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5. Opus remains limited to paid plans, but the free tier now looks far more competitive for users who want fast AI responses for writing, research, coding help, summaries, and daily productivity tasks.

Anthropic is clearly targeting users who want quick, low-cost AI without sacrificing too much intelligence. Haiku models have traditionally focused on speed and efficiency, but Haiku 5.5 appears to bring a much stronger performance jump than a typical incremental update.

Claude Haiku 5.5 Takes Aim at GPT-6 Luna

Anthropic is directly comparing Claude Haiku 5.5 with GPT-6 Luna, the model being rolled out to free ChatGPT users. According to Anthropic’s own benchmark results, Haiku 5.5 outperforms GPT-6 Luna across every shared test listed by the company.

One of the most notable results comes from OSWorld 2.1, a benchmark that measures how well an AI model can operate a computer. Claude Haiku 5.5 reportedly scored 72.4%, while GPT-6 Luna scored 48.9%. That is a significant gap, especially for users interested in AI agents, workflow automation, and models that can handle computer-based tasks more reliably.

The model also performed strongly in coding-related tests. On Terminal-Bench 4.0, Claude Haiku 5.5 scored 39.2%, compared with 16.4% for GPT-6 Luna. Anthropic also claims the improvement over Claude Haiku 4.5 is dramatic, with the older Haiku model scoring just 15.7% on OSWorld.

These results suggest that Claude Haiku 5.5 is not just faster than its predecessor, but also much more capable in practical, task-based scenarios. However, it is worth noting that these benchmark numbers come from Anthropic, and independent testing has not yet confirmed the results. As with any new AI model release, real-world use will be the ultimate test.

A Major Price Cut for Developers

For developers, the most important update may be the new API pricing. Claude Haiku 5.5 is significantly cheaper than Haiku 4.5, making it a more attractive option for apps, AI agents, customer support tools, coding assistants, content workflows, and automation platforms.

Anthropic lists pricing for Claude Haiku 5.5 at $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens for requests up to 100,000 tokens. By comparison, Haiku 4.5 cost $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. That represents a price drop of up to 90% for standard requests.

For longer requests, pricing rises to $0.50 per million input tokens and $2.50 per million output tokens. Even then, Anthropic says average savings are around 75%. This lower pricing could make Claude Haiku 5.5 especially useful for developers building high-volume AI products where cost per query matters.

Anthropic has also reduced cache read pricing for Claude Sonnet 5.5 by half, giving developers another way to cut costs when building with its models.

Claude Haiku 5.5 Comes to Paid Copilot Plans

Claude Haiku 5.5 is also being added to paid Copilot plans, with availability rolling out gradually. This gives developers another model choice for coding support, especially if they want a fast and cost-efficient assistant for programming tasks.

Given Haiku 5.5’s improved benchmark performance in coding tests, it could become a popular option for developers who need quick code suggestions, terminal help, debugging support, documentation assistance, and lightweight software development workflows.

Monthly API Credits for Max and Team Subscribers

Anthropic is also introducing monthly API credits for certain paid Claude users. Max 5x subscribers receive $100 in monthly developer platform credit, while Max 20x subscribers receive $200. Team plans can receive up to $500 in shared monthly credit across members.

These credits can be used with any Claude model, including Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus. However, Anthropic has not listed monthly API credits for Free or Pro users.

This move makes Claude’s higher-tier subscriptions more appealing to power users, startups, teams, and developers who want to experiment with AI tools without immediately paying separate API costs.

Why Claude Haiku 5.5 Matters

Claude Haiku 5.5 arrives at a time when competition among free AI models is heating up. Users now expect free AI assistants to be fast, capable, and useful for real work, not just basic chatbot conversations.

By making Haiku 5.5 available on the free Claude plan, Anthropic is giving everyday users access to a fast model that may be strong enough for many common tasks. For developers, the steep API price reduction could make Claude more competitive for large-scale AI integrations.

The combination of free access, faster responses, lower developer costs, and improved benchmark claims makes Claude Haiku 5.5 one of Anthropic’s most important model updates so far. Independent testing will determine how well it performs outside Anthropic’s own numbers, but on paper, this release makes Claude a stronger option for both casual users and developers looking for affordable AI performance.
