Citizen Introduces Affordable Open-Heart Automatic Watches With 42-Hour Power Reserve
Citizen has expanded its mechanical watch lineup in Japan with four new open-heart automatic models designed to bring more visual excitement to entry-level mechanical watch buyers. The new releases combine classic stainless steel styling, accessible pricing, and a visible balance wheel that gives wearers a glimpse of the movement at work.
The latest models join the Citizen Collection and arrive in four dial and case variations: a two-tone silver and gold model, a clean silver version, a sleek black dial option, and a deep blue variant. Each watch features an open-heart window at 6 o’clock, allowing the movement’s balance wheel to be seen in motion. This small mechanical detail adds character to an otherwise simple three-hand design, making the watches feel more dynamic on the wrist.
All four watches use a 41mm stainless steel case with a thickness of 11.7mm. The design is polished enough for everyday wear while still maintaining a traditional mechanical watch look. Mirror-finished cuts on the bezel and beveled edges on the bracelet help catch the light, giving the watches a more refined appearance than their affordable pricing might suggest.
Inside each model is Citizen’s Caliber 8229 automatic mechanical movement. This movement supports both automatic winding and manual winding, making it practical for daily use. It also includes hacking seconds, allowing the second hand to stop when setting the time for more precise adjustment. The movement runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour, uses 21 jewels, and offers a power reserve of approximately 42 hours.
The mechanical theme continues on the back of the watch, where a transparent exhibition case back lets owners view the movement from the rear. For buyers interested in affordable automatic watches, this combination of an open-heart dial and see-through case back offers a more engaging experience than a fully closed design.
Citizen has also given the models solid everyday durability. The watches come with 10 ATM water resistance, equivalent to 100 meters, making them suitable for regular daily activities and light water exposure. They also feature mineral crystal, luminous hands and markers, applied baton indices, and stainless steel bracelets with tri-fold push-button clasps.
The two-tone NH9154-51A model features a silver dial with gold-tone accents and is priced at ¥37,400, or roughly $237. The silver NH9150-52A, black NH9150-52E, and blue NH9150-52L versions are priced at ¥31,900, or around $202. Sales in Japan are scheduled to begin on August 6.
For now, these new Citizen open-heart automatic watches appear to be limited to the Japanese market, with no confirmed details about international availability. If they do reach other regions, they could be appealing options for buyers looking for an affordable automatic watch with visible mechanical movement, reliable specifications, and classic styling.
