India’s Mobile App Market Hits Record Spending as AI and Subscriptions Take Off
India has long been known as the world’s biggest market for mobile app downloads, but turning those downloads into revenue has been a much harder challenge. That picture is now changing quickly as Indian users spend more money on AI tools, streaming platforms, cloud storage, productivity apps, and digital subscriptions.
According to new data from Sensor Tower, India’s mobile app market reached a record $345 million in consumer spending during the second quarter of 2026. That marks a 35% increase compared with the same period last year, making India one of the fastest-growing major app markets in the world.
For years, India’s app economy was driven mainly by massive download numbers. The country still records around 6.3 billion app downloads per quarter, a level that has remained fairly steady since 2023. What has changed is how much users are willing to spend after installing those apps. Sensor Tower says India’s revenue per download has more than doubled over the past three and a half years, showing a major shift in consumer behavior.
A key reason for this growth is the rapid adoption of digital payments. Services such as UPI, mobile wallets, and direct bank-based payments have made in-app purchases easier and faster for millions of users. As payment friction decreases, more consumers are comfortable paying for premium features, monthly subscriptions, cloud storage, video streaming, and AI-powered services.
Generative AI apps are among the biggest winners in this shift. ChatGPT and Claude together accounted for nearly 83% of India’s AI app revenue in the second quarter, according to Sensor Tower. The rise of AI chatbots, writing assistants, research tools, and productivity platforms has created a new category of paid digital services that Indian users are increasingly willing to try.
Non-gaming apps are also becoming more important to India’s app revenue growth. Sensor Tower reports that non-gaming categories made up 68% of India’s mobile app revenue in the first half of 2026, compared with 58% three years earlier. This shows that the market is expanding beyond mobile games and moving toward everyday digital services such as entertainment, productivity, education, storage, and AI.
Streaming apps are also benefiting from India’s rising app spending. Platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Sony LIV, and JioHotstar saw higher consumer spending during the quarter. Google One became the highest-grossing mobile app in India during the period, highlighting strong demand for cloud storage and subscription-based digital services.
Gaming remains relevant as well. While global mobile gaming revenue declined during the quarter, India’s gaming revenue increased 3.7% from the previous quarter. This suggests that India’s gaming market still has room to grow, even as non-gaming apps take a larger share of overall spending.
Despite the impressive growth, India still trails mature app markets in revenue per download. In the United States, revenue per download is around $4.60. South Korea stands at about $3.90, while Japan reaches roughly $6.10. India remains far below those levels, but the gap also points to a large long-term opportunity. With its huge user base and improving monetization, India could become one of the most important markets for app developers and subscription-based services.
Appfigures also sees continued growth in India’s app subscription market, though it notes that the pace has moderated after a strong AI-driven surge over the past two years. The firm estimates that ChatGPT currently generates about $60,000 per day in India and received around 1.8 million downloads over the past month. That is lower than the roughly $80,000 per day seen last October, but still reflects strong demand for paid AI services.
India’s app economy is entering a new phase. The country is no longer just a high-download, low-revenue market. As digital payments become more common and users grow more comfortable with subscriptions, India is emerging as a major growth engine for mobile app revenue.
For app developers, AI companies, streaming platforms, and subscription services, India is becoming harder to ignore. The market still has plenty of room to mature, but the latest numbers show a clear trend: Indian consumers are spending more on mobile apps, and that shift could reshape the global app economy in the years ahead.
