The Witcher 4 Physical Edition Confirmed, But PS5 Buyers May Not Get a Disc
CD Projekt Red has confirmed that The Witcher 4 will receive a physical boxed release, even as the gaming industry continues its steady shift toward digital distribution. The upcoming sequel, which places Ciri at the center of the story, is currently aiming for a 2028 launch and is already running on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S.
The big question, however, is whether the PlayStation 5 version will actually include a game disc.
CD Projekt Red joint CEO Michał Nowakowski recently explained that the studio wants to offer fans something physical to collect, but it cannot control platform-holder manufacturing decisions. If Sony moves ahead with ending production of new PlayStation game discs in January 2028, The Witcher 4’s PS5 physical edition may ship as a box without a disc.
That does not mean fans will be left with an empty case. According to Nowakowski, CD Projekt Red remains committed to creating a physical package filled with collectible extras. The studio sees boxed editions as more than just a way to deliver the game; they are also a celebration for fans who enjoy maps, artwork, lore items, and other tangible pieces of a game’s world.
This approach would fit perfectly with CD Projekt Red’s history. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077 both included bonus physical items in their standard boxed editions, such as world maps, postcards, compendiums, stickers, and thank-you notes from the developers. For many players, those extras became part of the experience, especially for fans who enjoy owning something they can display or revisit outside the game itself.
If physical discs are no longer available for PlayStation by the time The Witcher 4 launches, the boxed edition could include a download code alongside collectible items. That would allow CD Projekt Red to keep the tradition of physical releases alive while adapting to a market that is becoming increasingly digital.
The Witcher 4 is expected to mark a major new chapter for the franchise. With Ciri taking the lead role, the game will move beyond Geralt’s main saga while still remaining rooted in the dark fantasy world that made the series famous. CD Projekt Red has not yet revealed full gameplay details, story specifics, or the final contents of the physical edition, but the confirmation of a boxed release is already welcome news for collectors.
