PlayStation Plans PS5 Disc Releases Beyond 2028 as Gamers Push Back on Digital-Only Future

Sony may keep producing some PS5 discs after 2028 as PlayStation shifts toward digital games

Sony’s move toward an all-digital PlayStation future may not happen as suddenly as many physical game collectors feared. While the company has reportedly told partners that it plans to stop regular PlayStation disc production in January 2028, new details suggest that some PS5 physical games could still be manufactured and shipped after that deadline.

According to information reportedly shared with publishers and developers, Sony will continue allowing re-orders for existing PlayStation disc games beyond January 2028. That means retailers and distribution partners may still be able to request additional copies of older PS5 titles, even as the company reduces its reliance on physical media.

The change appears to be part of a gradual transition rather than an immediate shutdown. Sony has made it clear that digital game sales now dominate the PlayStation ecosystem, with more players choosing downloads over boxed copies. However, the continued availability of select physical PS5 games could help ease the shift for collectors, retailers, and players who still prefer discs.

The future of PS5 physical games after 2028

Recent reports indicated that a facility responsible for producing PlayStation discs was preparing to scale down operations. That raised concerns that PS5 physical game production would end completely in early 2028. However, the latest information suggests Blu-ray disc manufacturing may continue at a reduced level for certain titles.

This approach would make sense for Sony. Older PS5 games usually sell at a slower rate than major new releases, so producing limited batches of existing titles would require far less manufacturing capacity. It would also allow retailers to keep popular catalog games available in boxed form for a while longer.

Still, the bigger direction is clear: new PlayStation releases are expected to become increasingly digital. Future PS5 games, and likely PS6 titles, may not receive traditional physical editions at all. For players who enjoy building game collections, lending discs, trading used games, or reselling finished titles, this shift could significantly change how PlayStation ownership works.

Digital download codes may return to retail stores

Sony is also reportedly preparing new ways for retailers to sell PlayStation games without relying on discs. The company has told partners it plans to give publishers the option to release new games at retail through digital codes.

This could mean boxed products containing download vouchers, store-sold game codes, or other retail-friendly digital purchasing options. It would allow physical stores to remain part of the PlayStation game market even if discs become less common.

At the moment, the PlayStation Store is the main destination for buying downloadable PlayStation games. If Sony expands digital code sales through retailers, players could see more competition, more promotions, and more purchasing choices outside the console’s official storefront.

Why PlayStation fans are concerned

The move away from physical games has been controversial. Many players still value discs because they offer a sense of ownership that digital licenses often do not. A physical PS5 game can be displayed, loaned to a friend, traded in, or resold. Digital games, by contrast, are usually tied to a single account and cannot be transferred.

Collectors are especially worried about long-term preservation. If future PlayStation games are only available digitally, access may depend on account status, store availability, licensing agreements, and Sony’s long-term support for older platforms.

There is also the issue of pricing. Physical games often drop in price faster at retail, and used copies provide another way for players to save money. A digital-first marketplace could reduce those options unless Sony and retailers offer more competitive download code pricing.

A slower end for PlayStation discs

The good news for fans of physical media is that PS5 discs may not disappear overnight. If Sony continues producing select older games after January 2028, players will still have some time to buy boxed editions before the PlayStation ecosystem becomes fully digital.

However, the long-term strategy seems unavoidable. Sony is preparing PlayStation for a future where downloads, digital licenses, and retail game codes replace traditional Blu-ray discs. The transition may be slower than expected, but the era of physical PlayStation games is clearly approaching its final chapter.
