PlayStation’s Digital Future Could Still Leave Room for Physical Games

The debate over physical games is heating up again as more players worry that future PlayStation consoles may move entirely toward digital downloads. With Sony reportedly reducing PS5 disc production, collectors and longtime fans are asking the same question: is this the beginning of the end for physical PlayStation games?

One tech industry expert believes there may be another path forward. Instead of relying on traditional Blu-ray discs, future PlayStation hardware could use compact 3D NAND flash cartridges, giving players a modern version of physical media that is faster, smaller, and better suited for today’s massive game files.

The idea is simple but ambitious. Current PS5 discs are limited by older optical media technology. Many modern games already require large downloads, updates, or installations even when purchased on disc. Blu-ray discs also cannot match the speed of the ultra-fast SSD storage inside the PS5. That means physical copies often serve more as license keys than complete plug-and-play products.

3D NAND flash cartridges could solve some of those problems. These small removable storage cards could potentially deliver read speeds of up to 4 GB/s, making them far faster than traditional discs. In theory, Sony could produce cartridges with capacities as high as 1 TB, which would be more than enough for even the largest PS5 or future PS6 games.

For players, the benefits could be significant. Installation times could be greatly reduced or possibly removed altogether. Games could load faster, physical editions could feel more complete, and collectors would still have something tangible to buy, display, trade, and resell.

However, there is one major obstacle: cost.

Flash memory is much more expensive than Blu-ray discs, especially at higher capacities. A 1 TB cartridge would likely be too costly for mass-market game releases. Even a smaller 512 GB version, which has been suggested as a more realistic compromise, would still cost more to manufacture than current disc-based games.

That price difference could make cartridge-based PlayStation games a premium product rather than a standard format. Publishers may be reluctant to absorb the extra cost, and consumers may not want to pay more unless the benefits are clear. Sony would also need to build strong encryption and security features into the cartridges to prevent piracy.

There is also the broader issue of memory supply. Demand for flash storage remains high across smartphones, PCs, servers, consoles, and other electronics. If Sony chose to rely on flash cartridges for physical games, production costs could fluctuate depending on global memory availability.

Another alternative being discussed is passive photopolymer cards, which would function more like optical storage in a card-like format. These could be cheaper than advanced flash cartridges because they would not require chips or electronic pins. The downside is that they would need a special optical reader, which could increase the cost and complexity of future PlayStation hardware.

A more practical short-term option may be an external disc drive for the next PlayStation console. If a future PS6 launches without a built-in disc drive, Sony could still support PS4 and PS5 physical games through a separate accessory. This would help preserve backward compatibility while allowing the main console design to focus on digital gaming.

Still, that solution would not fully satisfy collectors who want new physical releases to continue. For many players, physical games are about more than ownership. They represent preservation, lending, resale value, artwork, and the simple satisfaction of having a real product on the shelf.

The future of PlayStation physical media remains uncertain. Digital downloads are convenient and profitable, but there is still a passionate audience that does not want gaming to become entirely digital. If Sony wants to keep those players engaged, it may need to rethink what “physical games” should look like in the next generation.

Whether that means 3D NAND cartridges, external disc drives, or another new format, one thing is clear: the demand for physical PlayStation games has not disappeared. It is evolving, and Sony’s next move could shape how players buy and preserve games for years to come.
