The Witcher 4 Release Window Confirmed, But Physical Copies Remain Unclear for Some Consoles
The Witcher 4 is already one of the most anticipated upcoming RPGs, and fans are eager to learn exactly how CD Projekt Red plans to release the next major chapter in the legendary fantasy series. While the game’s release window has now been confirmed, questions remain about whether physical editions will be available across all platforms.
At the moment, there is still no clear confirmation regarding a physical release of The Witcher 4 on every console. CD Projekt Red has not fully detailed which platforms the game will launch on, leaving room for speculation about potential versions for Xbox systems and the rumored Nintendo Switch 2.
For Xbox players, a physical edition still appears possible. Microsoft has not announced any plan to completely abandon physical games on its current consoles or its next-generation Xbox hardware, reportedly codenamed Helix. There has also been discussion around a disc-to-digital system that could let players convert an Xbox game disc into a digital license.
Under this kind of system, a player could insert a physical disc, receive a digital license, and then access the game across compatible Xbox consoles. If the disc were later sold or given to someone else, the license could transfer to the new owner once they insert the disc into their own console. If such a feature becomes part of Xbox’s future strategy, it could help preserve the value of physical games while also supporting the convenience of digital libraries.
The situation with the Nintendo Switch 2 is also interesting. If The Witcher 4 does arrive on Nintendo’s next console, it could be released in one of two physical formats. The first option would be a full cartridge containing the complete game. The second would be a game-key card, where only part of the game is stored physically while the rest must be downloaded before play.
Even with a game-key card approach, players would likely still be able to resell or trade their copy, which remains one of the biggest advantages of physical game ownership. For many fans, especially collectors, the ability to keep, lend, trade, or display a physical edition is still an important part of buying major releases like The Witcher 4.
Beyond The Witcher 4, CD Projekt Red is also preparing more content for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. A new paid expansion titled Songs of the Past is planned for release in 2027. This will be the game’s third major expansion, following the highly praised Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.
That is a remarkable milestone for a game originally released on May 19, 2015. More than a decade later, The Witcher 3 remains one of the most beloved open-world RPGs ever made, and the arrival of another expansion shows how much staying power the franchise still has.
