CATL Plans Global EV Battery Repair Network With Prices as Low as $1,480

Electric vehicle battery repairs could soon become far more affordable, thanks to a major expansion planned by CATL, the world’s largest EV battery manufacturer. The company has confirmed that it aims to grow its Ning battery repair network to 100 cities worldwide by the end of 2026, bringing advanced battery servicing to more EV owners across global markets.

The move could significantly change how damaged EV battery packs are handled. Today, even relatively minor battery damage can lead to extremely expensive replacement bills. In China, replacing an EV battery pack can cost around $14,800, even if the issue is limited to something like a dent, scratch, gouge, or localized impact damage. In many cases, insurers and repair shops treat battery pack damage as a major failure, sometimes resulting in the vehicle being written off.

CATL wants to change that approach by repairing battery packs at the cell level instead of replacing the entire unit. Its cell-to-pack repair process targets only the damaged cells inside the battery, bringing the estimated repair cost down to about $1,480. That is roughly one-tenth of the cost of a full battery replacement and could make EV ownership much less intimidating for drivers worried about long-term repair expenses.

The company is also investing in automated repair technology. CATL says its robotic repair lines can cut, paint, seal, and restore battery packs with minimal human involvement. This could improve consistency, reduce labor costs, and speed up repairs across its expanding service network.

Repair times are another major focus. CATL’s service centers are aiming to complete many EV battery repairs within three days. For more routine battery issues, the company is also deploying electric repair trucks capable of performing 30 diagnostic checks and 50 repair procedures. These mobile units could complete around 90% of basic regular repair cases in as little as 48 hours.

CATL has already opened EV battery repair centers in Norway and Istanbul, while experience centers are operating in Bangkok and Riyadh. The company’s wider service footprint includes 1,376 franchised service points across 84 countries, giving it a strong foundation for rapid international expansion.

One of the most important changes is that CATL now says its repair network will not be limited to vehicles using its own batteries. The company claims the Ning network will be able to service any EV battery, making it a more model-agnostic repair solution. This could be a major advantage as the global EV market continues to grow and more drivers seek affordable battery maintenance outside of full pack replacement.

In the United States, the EV battery industry has largely focused on recycling and second-life use rather than individual cell repair. Companies in that space can recover a high percentage of valuable materials from dead battery packs or reuse older packs for energy storage. CATL’s strategy is different: it believes many batteries should be repaired and kept in service for as long as possible before they are recycled.

If successful, this approach could have a major impact on electric vehicle ownership costs. Battery replacement remains one of the biggest concerns for potential EV buyers, even as newer battery packs continue to offer longer warranties and improved durability. Affordable cell-level repairs could help reduce insurance costs, lower total ownership expenses, and make used EVs more attractive to buyers.

CATL currently produces a large share of the world’s EV batteries, giving it the scale to influence repair standards across the industry. If its global repair network delivers on its promised pricing and turnaround times, EV battery damage may no longer mean a massive repair bill or a total loss.

The expansion of affordable EV battery repair could become a key step in making electric cars more practical, sustainable, and accessible for everyday drivers.
