Casio’s Rugged Mudman Gets a Smart Upgrade With MIP Display and Fitness Tracking

Casio GDG-B100 Mudman Debuts with MIP Display, Red Backlight, and Run Tracking

Casio has officially introduced the GDG-B100 Mudman in Japan, giving the rugged G-Shock lineup a notable upgrade with a memory-in-pixel display, fitness tracking features, and a new red LED backlight designed for low-light use. The watch is available for preorder in three color options, with a listed price of ¥38,500, including tax, which is approximately $245. A full release is scheduled for October.

The GDG-B100 stands out as the first Mudman model to feature a MIP display. This type of screen is known for strong outdoor visibility, especially in bright daylight, while remaining efficient enough for long-term use. For a watch built around outdoor activities, rugged environments, and quick readability, the display upgrade is one of the biggest changes in this new model.

Casio has also added a red LED backlight instead of a standard white one. The idea behind the red illumination is to help preserve night vision. When checking the time in the dark, red light is less disruptive to eyes that have already adjusted to low-light conditions, making it useful for camping, night hiking, fieldwork, and other outdoor situations.

One major difference from some other G-Shock models is the absence of Tough Solar charging. Instead, the GDG-B100 uses a replaceable battery rated for around two years of operation. While solar charging would have been a welcome feature for many outdoor users, the two-year battery life still offers a practical level of convenience for everyday wear and adventure use.

The watch keeps the tough identity expected from the Mudman series. It measures 63.6 × 49.6 × 16.2 mm and weighs 66 g. Casio uses carbon fiber reinforced resin for the case, supported by its Carbon Core Guard structure for added durability without making the watch overly heavy. The protective bumper-style guards around the buttons are inspired by off-road vehicles and survival equipment, giving the model a more aggressive and utility-focused look.

As expected from a Mudman watch, the GDG-B100 is built to resist mud and dust. It also offers 200-meter water resistance, making it suitable for harsh outdoor conditions, wet environments, and demanding daily use. The design clearly targets users who want a rugged digital watch that can handle more than just casual wear.

Fitness and training features are another key part of the GDG-B100. The watch includes an accelerometer that can track distance, speed, and pace during runs. It supports automatic and manual lap recording, auto pause, and a run log capable of storing up to 100 activities, with up to 140 laps for each run. These features make it more capable as a workout companion while still maintaining the traditional G-Shock toughness.

Bluetooth connectivity adds more functionality when paired with the Casio Watches app. Users can receive notifications, access world time for around 300 cities, review life log data, and improve distance accuracy through correction using a connected phone’s GPS. This gives the watch a useful balance between standalone toughness and modern smart features.

Additional tools include a 100-hour stopwatch, an interval timer with up to five steps, four alarms, and vibration alerts. These functions make the GDG-B100 practical not only for running and training but also for work, travel, and outdoor routines.

The new Casio Mudman GDG-B100 is available in three versions: the black GDG-B100-1JF, the green GDG-B100-1A3JF, and the sand-colored GDG-B100-1A5JF. Each model shares the same rugged design and feature set, giving buyers a choice between classic, military-inspired, and desert-style color options.

With its MIP display, mud-resistant build, red backlight, Bluetooth support, and run tracking features, the Casio GDG-B100 Mudman brings a fresh mix of durability and everyday practicality to the Mudman lineup. While the lack of Tough Solar may disappoint some longtime G-Shock fans, the new display and training tools help position this model as one of the more interesting recent additions to Casio’s rugged watch family.
