Casio G-Shock GBX100SFJ-1 Debuts as a Stealthy G-LIDE Surf Watch With Ocean-Friendly Materials
Casio has introduced the G-Shock GBX100SFJ-1, a special G-LIDE surf watch created in collaboration with Surfrider Foundation Japan. Built on the popular GBX100 platform, this limited-edition model combines rugged G-Shock durability, surf-focused data tools, Bluetooth connectivity, and a low-profile all-black design aimed at surfers, outdoor athletes, and everyday watch fans.
The GBX100SFJ-1 immediately stands out with its stealthy black case, black soft urethane band, and high-contrast negative display. It has a sporty but understated look, making it suitable for both ocean sessions and daily wear. Casio has also added subtle design touches tied to Surfrider Foundation Japan, including the organization’s logo and messaging that reflects a commitment to living in harmony with nature.
In keeping with that environmental theme, the case and band use biomass plastic, offering a more eco-conscious approach while maintaining the toughness expected from a G-Shock. The band loop features the “#oceanfriendly lifestyle” message, while select bezel details use phosphorescent paint for added visibility in low-light conditions.
For surfers, the Casio G-Shock GBX100SFJ-1 brings several practical tools to the wrist. The watch includes a tide graph, moon data, and sunrise and sunset time displays, giving users quick access to important ocean conditions. Its high-visibility MIP LCD is designed to remain readable outdoors, even under bright sunlight, which is especially useful at the beach or on the water.
The watch is also water resistant to 20 ATM, equivalent to 200 meters, making it well suited for surfing, swimming, and other water-based activities. As expected from the G-Shock line, it features a shock-resistant structure built for tough use.
Bluetooth connectivity adds another layer of convenience. When paired with a smartphone through the Casio Watches app, the GBX100SFJ-1 can sync accurate time automatically and access tide information for approximately 3,300 locations worldwide. The app also supports easier watch settings and a Find My Phone feature.
While the GBX100SFJ-1 does not include a heart rate sensor, it still offers useful fitness tracking features. A built-in accelerometer measures distance, speed, pace, and calories burned, making it suitable for running and general training. It can also track daily steps and store up to 100 runs, with up to 140 laps per run in the training log.
Additional training tools include auto and manual lap functions, auto-pause, target alerts, and customizable training displays. For daily use, the watch can show notifications for calls, emails, calendar events, reminders, and messages from supported smartphone apps.
The GBX100SFJ-1 measures 50.9 × 46 × 14.7 mm and weighs 66 grams, keeping it relatively lightweight for a rugged digital G-Shock. It uses inorganic glass, a stainless steel and resin bezel construction, and a black ion-plated bezel finish. The soft urethane band is designed to fit wrists from 145 mm to 215 mm.
Other features include world time for 38 cities and UTC, automatic daylight saving time adjustment, a 1-second stopwatch with up to 100 hours of measurement, an interval timer, four daily alarms with snooze, vibration alerts, a full auto calendar, 12/24-hour format switching, airplane mode, and button sound control.
The watch uses a standard battery rated for approximately two years of operation. It does not include solar charging, but it does offer a power-saving function that turns off the display at a designated time to help conserve battery life.
Casio is also giving the GBX100SFJ-1 special eco-conscious packaging made with recycled materials. The package includes a custom Surfrider Foundation Japan pouch, reinforcing the watch’s ocean-focused identity.
The Casio G-Shock GBX100SFJ-1 is priced at ¥29,700, which is around $186. It is available for pre-order in Japan, with official sales expected to begin later this month. At this time, Casio has not confirmed whether the model will be released globally.
