Casio’s classic A159 digital watch may be getting a fresh style upgrade just in time for spring. Two new versions, reportedly set for an April reveal, have surfaced with a dial design that leans into traditional Japanese aesthetics while keeping the familiar A159 look and everyday functionality intact.
The upcoming models are said to be the A159WEVJ-2 and A159WEVJ-7, both built around the same slim, rectangular digital face the A159 line is known for. What’s new is the dial: each watch features a Seigaiha-inspired wave pattern, a traditional Japanese motif made up of repeating arcs that resemble rolling waves. It’s a small change on paper, but visually it makes these versions stand out immediately from the standard A159 options.
The blue variant uses a rich indigo tone with the wave pattern spread across the dial, giving it a bolder, more traditional look. The grey version takes a subtler approach, applying the same Seigaiha pattern in a quieter, muted finish. Both dials reportedly combine printed texture with a vapor-deposited treatment, creating a soft reflective effect that shifts with the light rather than looking like a flat graphic.
If you’re wondering about upgrades to performance or features, these models are expected to stick to the tried-and-true A159 formula. That includes a compact case size around 36.8 × 33.2 × 8.5 mm, a lightweight resin case paired with a stainless steel bracelet, and the practical functions people buy this watch for in the first place: daily alarm, hourly time signal, stopwatch, auto calendar, and 12/24-hour time formats. You still get LED backlighting, up to seven years of claimed battery life, and 30-meter water resistance. Acrylic crystal remains part of the package as well, reinforcing that this release is focused on design rather than a materials or durability overhaul.
There are a couple of themed details that add to the appeal. The caseback is rumored to feature “Casio” engraved in katakana, which ties the cultural inspiration together nicely. Packaging also appears to be customized, carrying a wave-pattern design that matches the theme of the dial.
The biggest surprise may be the price. These wave-dial A159 variants are expected to come in around $100, which is higher than many typical A159 releases. The premium seems to be tied to the special finishing, the dial work, and the possibility that this is a more limited run rather than a feature-packed upgrade.
For fans of Casio digital watches, the appeal is straightforward: you get the same lightweight, reliable A159 experience, but with a more distinctive, Japanese wave-pattern dial that feels like a collector-friendly twist on an all-time classic.
