Capcom Shares Dip 9.5% Following Q1 FY2025 Report on Declining Sales of Monster Hunter Wilds

On July 31, Capcom’s shares in Japan took a significant hit following the release of its Q1 FY2025 financial report. The drop partly stemmed from declining sales of their latest release, Monster Hunter Wilds.

Before the report, Capcom’s stock closed at ¥4,284 on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, but opened noticeably lower the next day, plunging 9.5% to a session low of ¥3,856. Despite a recovery of about 2% afterward, the market reaction highlighted concerns.

Interestingly, Capcom showcased a remarkable 53.7% year-on-year rise in net sales and a soaring 90.8% boost in operating profit for Q1 ending June 30, 2025. However, the “soft” sales of Monster Hunter Wilds, one of Capcom’s key revenue drivers, may have spooked investors.

Monster Hunter Wilds saw a sharp decline in sales, moving just 447,000 units between April and June. This is a stark contrast to its initial success of 8 million units in the first 10 days and more than 10 million in the opening month. Despite a total of 10.585 million units sold to date, the game’s initial explosive debut in February 2025 is yet to be matched. However, it still holds the title as Capcom’s fastest-selling game and one of the top titles of 2025.

Monster Hunter Rise, in comparison, sold 389,000 units during the same timeframe, closely matching Wilds’ performance. Capcom acknowledged these sales fluctuations, noting:

“Although sales were soft for Monster Hunter Wilds, Monster Hunter Rise continued to see growth. Additionally, the latest Resident Evil announcement in June led to increased sales in the series, with Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 4 performing strongly.”

Capcom also highlighted strong sales of Devil May Cry 5 and other titles, citing efforts to enhance brand value, which pushed catalog titles to 13.36 million units sold, up from 9.26 million in the previous year.

Monster Hunter Wilds now ranks 9th among Capcom’s top sellers for Q1 FY2025. The downturn is partly attributed to ongoing PC performance issues due to the older RE Engine, garnering a 47.57% “Overwhelmingly Negative” user score on Steam, with nearly 140,845 negative reviews out of 268,325.

On a brighter note, Capcom announced on social media that content planned for September’s Title 3 Update will be released earlier, on August 13, via Patch 1.021. This update promises new quest difficulties and weapon balancing, though performance optimization concerns remain.

Despite an overall strong financial year, Monster Hunter Wilds’ sales decline has left investors uneasy amid ongoing player dissatisfaction over performance issues.
