Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Signals a Bold Return to Its Premium Legacy

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Release Date, Early Access, DMZ Details, and Pre-Order Bonuses Revealed

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is officially set to launch on October 23, 2026, bringing Infinity Ward’s blockbuster military shooter series back with a premium release across current-generation platforms. Activision has confirmed that the game will arrive on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.

The new entry will not be released on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, marking a full move away from last-generation consoles. It also will not be available through Xbox Game Pass at launch, meaning players who want to jump in on day one will need to purchase the game.

Players who digitally pre-order or pre-purchase either the Standard Edition or Vault Edition will receive early access ahead of the full release. Campaign early access begins on October 16, giving fans a full week to experience the story before launch. Early access to the full DMZ mode begins on October 20.

Pre-order bonuses include the Hunter Killer Operator Skin, the Gilded Pearl Camo Pack, and the Inner Circuit weapon blueprint. Those who choose the Vault Edition will get even more content, including the Hostile Alliance Operator Pack, the Special Forces Operator Pack, the Signature Weapon Collection, one season of BlackCell, and a DMZ Deployment Bonus.

Xbox players should also note that online multiplayer requires a Game Pass Essential subscription, which is sold separately.

The campaign in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 begins with a major military crisis on the Korean Peninsula. North Korea launches a full-scale invasion of South Korea, throwing the region into chaos. Players step into the role of Private Park, a young South Korean soldier experiencing real combat for the first time alongside his squad.

At the same time, Captain Price returns with his own mission, operating outside the system he once served. His storyline runs parallel to the main conflict, suggesting a campaign that blends large-scale warfare with covert operations and personal stakes.

DMZ also returns in Modern Warfare 4 as an extraction-based mode set in Hajin, a dangerous exclusion zone created after a nuclear reactor meltdown during the campaign. Located in a tri-point region near Russia and the Korean Peninsula, Hajin has become a battleground where rival forces fight to recover abandoned military technology.

Players can deploy solo or with a squad, search for valuable equipment, and attempt to extract before enemy operators or environmental threats bring the mission to an end. Dynamic weather will add unpredictability to each deployment, while a new Bounty system will track and punish players who aggressively hunt others.

Progression in DMZ will be tied to Operator-specific Trait Trees and upgrades for the Forward Operating Base, giving players more long-term goals and strategic choices as they build their loadouts and improve their chances of survival.

Multiplayer launches with 12 brand-new core 6v6 maps set in locations around the world. Larger Ground War maps will also be available for players who prefer massive battles with vehicles, wide combat zones, and more chaotic firefights.

Infinity Ward is also introducing a new Ballistic Authority system, described as a weapon-first technology stack designed to improve gunplay. The system connects aiming, weapon handling, audio, and visibility into one unified experience. One of the biggest changes is the removal of bloom, meaning bullets will follow recoil patterns rather than random spread. This should make weapons feel more consistent and reward players who master recoil control.

The Nintendo Switch 2 version is being developed natively in collaboration with Digital Legends, while Beenox is helping optimize the PC version. This suggests Activision is aiming for stronger platform-specific performance across all versions of the game.

With a new campaign focused on the Korean Peninsula, the return of DMZ, refined gunplay, and a current-gen-only launch, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is shaping up to be one of the biggest shooter releases of 2026. Fans looking to play early can begin with campaign access on October 16, DMZ access on October 20, and the full launch on October 23.
