Apple has long relied on Samsung and LG for the displays in its premium iPhone models, while Chinese manufacturer BOE has supplied panels for the more affordable versions. Historically, BOE has struggled with maintaining the necessary quality and quantity standards, which limited its role in Apple’s supply chain. However, recent reports hint at a potential shift, suggesting that BOE might secure a significant contract for the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro displays, pending approval.
If BOE meets Apple’s stringent quality requirements, it could be tasked with producing 50 million LTPO OLED panels for the iPhone 17 Pro. Traditionally, BOE has focused on creating LTPS OLED panels for Apple’s base and ‘Plus’ models. Yet, with the entire iPhone 17 lineup expected to feature LTPO displays capable of supporting high refresh rates, BOE’s involvement signifies a substantial change. This move likely aims to enhance sales, although it remains uncertain how it will compare to the iPhone 16, which dominated Q1 2025 sales.
A report from Sisajournal, highlighted by tipster @Jukanlosreve, indicates BOE’s potential role in this major order. Interestingly, while BOE could have been chosen for the base iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air, it is being considered for the higher-end Pro model. This could suggest a significant upgrade in BOE’s production capabilities, challenging the long-standing dominance of Samsung and LG.
However, it’s important to remain cautious as BOE has previously failed to meet order expectations. Earlier this year, they encountered difficulties fulfilling a 40 million LTPS OLED order, delivering only 7-8 million units, a shortfall that Samsung and LG had to cover. If BOE is indeed responsible for 50 million iPhone 17 Pro orders, it implies possible advancements in its manufacturing processes.
As with all emerging developments, it’s wise to stay updated as more information becomes available. While BOE has a history of falling short, the stakes are higher this time, and the impact on the display market could be significant.
