Beyond Garmin: New Global Smartwatch Debuts With an Intelligent Marathon Mode

Huawei is getting ready to launch the Watch GT Runner 2 globally, and it looks like a serious upgrade for runners and endurance athletes who want a Garmin alternative without leaving the smartwatch ecosystem behind.

Built in collaboration with marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge—just like the previous model—the Watch GT Runner 2 is positioned as a training-first wearable rather than a general-purpose fashion watch. One of the most attention-grabbing additions is an “intelligent marathon mode,” a new feature Huawei is teasing as a smarter way to train for long-distance events. The company describes it as a tool designed to help users prepare more effectively for marathon-style goals, suggesting the watch will focus heavily on structured training support and endurance planning.

Health and performance tracking also appear to be a big part of the Watch GT Runner 2’s identity. The smartwatch is expected to use Huawei’s TruSense system, which has already made its way to several recent Huawei wearables. TruSense is designed to track more than 60 health and fitness metrics and turn those readings into useful health insights—aimed at giving users a clearer picture of training load, recovery, and overall wellness trends.

For outdoor running and route accuracy, the Watch GT Runner 2 is also set to feature Huawei’s Sunflower positioning system. This should improve route tracking and activity location data, which is especially important for runners who train in varied environments and want consistent distance and pace measurements.

Huawei has confirmed the Watch GT Runner 2 will be sold internationally, but pricing hasn’t been revealed yet. With its athlete-backed development, marathon-focused training features, deeper health metrics, and enhanced positioning for outdoor tracking, the Watch GT Runner 2 is shaping up to be a compelling option for anyone shopping for a performance smartwatch built with runners in mind.
