Google is poised to expand its smartphone lineup with the introduction of the Pixel 9a later this month. However, the tech giant seems to be struggling to keep details under wraps. Not only has the Pixel 9a been the subject of extensive benchmarking, but a full review has also surfaced, offering prospective buyers insights into whether this could be their next smartphone of choice.
A deeper dive into the device’s performance reveals an interesting find: it scores lower on multi-core tests compared to the base Pixel 9, despite both models featuring the same Tensor G4 processor. This discrepancy suggests that Google might be utilizing a different, perhaps less powerful version of the SoC for the Pixel 9a—a move that wouldn’t be unprecedented.
Reports suggest that a scaled-down variant of the Tensor G4 is being mass-produced for the Pixel 9a to trim production costs. While the premium Pixel 9 series employs FOPLP (Fan-Out Panel Level Packaging), known for its thin die size and improved thermal management, the Pixel 9a seems to forgo these enhancements.
In a recent benchmarking scenario with YouTuber Sahil Karoul, the Pixel 9a reached a single-core score of 1,530 and a multi-core score of 3,344 on Geekbench 6. In contrast, the base Pixel 9 managed a multi-core score of 3,821, highlighting a noticeable performance gap. This could be attributed to the Pixel 9a’s Tensor G4 using Samsung’s IPoP technology, which potentially causes higher operating temperatures and diminished multi-core efficiency.
Adding to the speculated cost-saving measures, the Pixel 9a might lack the sophisticated cooling systems like the vapor chamber found in the base Pixel 9 models, which aids in better heat dissipation.
Interestingly, this might be Google’s final use of Samsung-produced chipsets as it reportedly plans to transition to TSMC’s technology with the introduction of the Tensor G5 in the upcoming Pixel 10 series. If a Pixel 10a becomes a reality, we may see enhanced thermal performance and improved overall efficiency compared to the Pixel 9a.
